Chicago, Dec 21 The nation’s railroads and union representatives signed an agreement granting about 750,000 non operating employees a raise of 1.44 dollars per hour plus company paid hospital and medical benefits retroactive to Dec 1 1955. The railroads will cover hospital and medical costs starting March 1 1956 up to 6.80 dollars per month per employee, with annual settlement costs around 300 million dollars. Non operating employees including telegraphers and clerks currently earn about 1.81 dollars per hour.

James W Kimmel of Stoystown Somerset has been promoted to chief warrant officer second grade. A WWII and Korean conflict veteran, he serves as unit administrator of Company C 110th Infantry at Somerset armory. He entered federal service April 18, 1942 and held posts at Fort Bragg Fort Benning and Fort Jackson with early European theater service. He previously held senior reserve roles and served in Korea before returning to civilian reserve and the Somerset post. He is married to Edith Steckman and was active in boxing and school sports, later collecting edged weapons and enjoying hunting and fishing. He is a member of Reading Brethren church Somerset American Legion and VFW.

Mother saves two children from coal gas in New Holland
In Lancaster a mother Martha Wert 33 was credited with saving her children Eugene Wert 8 and Lois Ann Wert 7 when coal gas filled their home. Eugene awakened, then his mother carried him outside before returning for Lois Ann and providing artificial respiration. Both children were treated at Lancaster General hospital in satisfactory condition. Mrs Wert was treated for shock and fumes exposure.
