The United Nations General Assembly unanimously approves U S Russian compromise plans to start negotiations on disarmament and peaceful space exploration. It expands the outer space committee to 28 members and sets a June 1 deadline for reporting back.
India faces possible backlash as it completes the conquest of Goa Daman and Diu. Finance Minister Morarji Desai warns American anger could hinder essential foreign aid from the United States and other donors. The U.N. Security Council debate on intervention was thwarted by a Soviet veto.
Two women en route from Roswell New Mexico to Bridgewater Massachusetts were admitted to Somerset Community Hospital for injuries from a turnpike wreck near Laurel Hill tunnel. The 1959 car burned after skidding into a guard rail. two other turnpike accidents left a Toledo man and a Norfolk woman hurt or treated.
Neil E. Ankeny was elected president of the Bakersville Volunteer Fire Company at the regular monthly meeting. Fifteen members attended. New officers include Paul Gallagher as vice president George Miller secretary and Richard Palmer financial secretary. George Doolittle re elected treasurer and Rev. Lloyd T Wilson chaplain for a one year term. Jay Knapp named trustee for five years to replace Roy Baker. other trustees remain Edward Stahl Harold Kuhlman Charles Ash and Robert Shanks. A Christmas party and a garage workers' party were planned. fund drive receipts totaled 751 with 623.58 spent on equipment and a 995.46 fund balance. Mortgage reduced to 3 000. A civil defense meeting was announced for the near future open to the public.
Somerset county weather conditions eased after a heavy post midnight snow squall. At 1 45 a m the Pennsylvania Department of Highways reports partial crews clearing roads. Roads listed as in pretty fair condition with about one inch of snow. Temperature was 23 degrees.
President Kennedy will leave for Bermuda Thursday morning and return Friday night to join a conference with Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. He visited his ill father Joseph P. Kennedy at Walter Reed and spoke with doctors as the elder Kennedy showed minor signs of awareness. The trip follows a day of family updates and discussions with foreign policy advisers over dinner.
President Kennedy met with his top foreign policy aides at his Florida home to plan two days of talks with Prime Minister Harold MacMillan in Bermuda. The gathering followed news of the president's ailing father and came as MacMillan prepared to travel to Bermuda.
Howard Stanley Clevenger to be sent to the Pennsylvania Industrial School for boys by Sheriff Norman Walker. He was sentenced in Somerset County to the school for delinquency of a minor burglary larceny and receiving stolen goods. James Russell Martin got 12 months in Somerset County Jail for burglary linked to the case.
Exiled Cuban leader Eloy Guierrez Menoyo told reporters of bitter fighting between guerrillas and 25 000 government troops in Cuba's central mountains. No confirmation came from officials and Radio Havana ridiculed the report as a U S maneuver.
At the Children's Aid Home board meeting president George S. Cook reported receipts of 4600.52 from the red stocking appeal plus additional gifts and offers. Dan Landis funds the large tree, Val Narad will decorate the outside tree, Brownie Troop No. 8 decorates the dining room, and Edwin Witt Jr. will weatherproof the exterior. Other attendees included Mrs A D Graham and Miss Marion Williams.
Katanga President Moise Tshombe and Congo Premier Cyril le Adoula left Kitona in guarded optimism after a day of secret talks at the U N base. They pledged to publish terms Thursday and aim to end the stalemate over Tshombe’s breakaway province.

U Thant defends action as restoring order and Congo integrity while dissent grows in Congress and among some allies who fear colonial precedent and economic stakes.
Somerset County Commissioner Lewis Baumgardner announced the county court house will be closed Saturday and Monday for the Christmas holidays. Business will resume Tuesday, December 26.

Five month old Guy William Schroyer was moved from Meyersdale Community Hospital to Children’s Hospital Pittsburgh after a Saturday fire in the Fair Hope area destroyed the Schroyer home. The family, parents Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Schroyer, and nearby relatives face housing needs. Red Cross and local friends organize donations via Red Cross office in Somerset and Holy Trinity Lutheran church in Berlin with pickup by Alex Ohler. Aims include preserving donor names and greetings, with continued drives as needs arise.
