The Civil Aeronautics Board opened an investigation into the midair collision of two Miami bound airliners over a Washington report says pilots skillfully averted injuries to 85 aboard. An Eastern Airlines DC-4 with 56 passengers and a Universal Airlines C-47 with 22 passengers brushed during the incident.
In London Prime Minister Attlee announced negotiations to grant Burma independence, saying it may quit the British crown and seek self government quickly. Churchill retorted that the empire seems to unravel, while Attlee warned him he has limited time to respond as Burmese leaders are summoned for talks in London.
Frank S. Green, longtime fugitive, was jailed after offering to plead guilty to passing bad checks. A former Norristown Investment and Loan Co. employee, Green surrendered in Dover and waived extradition. Judge Harold G. Knight scheduled a Jan. 10 hearing to allow witnesses to be located.
A massive earthquake near southern Japan triggered a seven-foot tidal wave with widespread destruction along Shikoku and southern Honshu. Reports say at least 1,000 Japanese killed, 1,000 homes under water in Kochi, with dozens dead or injured in nearby towns including Osaka. Allied forces reported no immediate casualties among occupation troops.
Snow and sleet began Friday morning with Pennsylvania highway crews deploying 25 plows and ashers to clear icy highways and byways. Snow totals reached about three inches in Laure Hill, two inches elsewhere, with no major accidents reported. The state highway department reported one to three inches of snow statewide by mid afternoon with highways open and cinder crews active. Pittsburgh faced heavy traffic jams and shoppers trudged through slush as cooler, then warmer, weather was forecast for today.
Republican State Chairman M Harvey Taylor rests comfortably after an operation at Polyclinic hospital to tie veins in both legs to stop further clots. The 70 year old Dauphin county state senator and GOP nominee for president pro tempore of the Senate has been in hospital since Monday after a clot moved to the chest. He was injured weeks earlier near Hershey when stepping into a culvert. Doctors say he is "coming along very nicely."
Mrs. Delt Stackhouse was abducted from her Dixon home and released six hours later amid a wide manhunt. Suspect Frank Sickles, 27, of Wyoming Til, was held for questioning. Sheriff Finch said no ransom note appeared and the family’s three children were unharmed.
