The Pennsylvania Dutch celebrate with varied customs. Farmers set hay bales to dew moisten fodder for good luck in the new year. Plain sects skip trees and gifts, while Gay Dutch enjoy cookies and Kris Kringle. Candlelight services, love feasts, and trombone choirs mark the season.
Stanley Harris Bialek Jr a Central City native and 1962 Shade High School graduate from Penn State was commissioned at Lackland on June 1966 and assigned to Sacramento Air Material Area McClellan AFB California. He married Barbara Michinock just after commissioning. Barbara recently passed the American Registry of Radiologic Technology exam and held roles as instructor organist and hospital staffer. The couple resides in Sacramento.
Real estate transfers filed December 20 in the office of Edgar W. Fritz cover several boroughs and townships including Somerset Confluence Elk Lick and Jenner with prices from 1 to 9 thousand dollars. Marriage license applications filed with H Andrew Horchner include couples from Rockwood Somerset Davidsville and The Hill.
The Berlin area hosted a Christmas party by the Lady Rebekah Lodge with a covered dish dinner in J.C.C.F. Hall. Members read notes, sang carols, exchanged gifts, and Santa distributed dances and games to 45 attendees.
Governor elect Raymond P. Shafer created an Economic Advisory Council to guide Pennsylvania’s future growth. Ten economists were named without pay, with Dean Willis J. Winn of Wharton as chairman and Norman Robertson as vice chairman.
