An explosion ruins a two story brick building on the South Side possibly burying two to five people. Eight injured or burned were taken to a hospital. officials say escaping illuminating gas caused the blast. Some buried were believed customers of a first floor tavern. Nine Arrested Over Counterfeit Ration Coupons in Reading
Eight filing station operators and a tire dealer were arrested today on federal charges of handling counterfeit ration coupons tied to about 40 000 gallons of gasoline. Two Deaths Attributed To Snow Storm In Gettysburg
In Gettysburg on December 19 a snow storm caused two fatalities. Carvin Altland, 52, of East Berlin, died after his truck struck a bridge wall on the slippery pike. coroner C. G. Cris said the death was accidental from a fractured skull. Mervin Yohe, the truck driver, was hospitalized with serious injuries. A second death involved Raymond Garfield Warner, a Reading railroad section foreman, who collapsed shoveling snow and died of a heart attack, per the coroner.
