Kent Murder Trial Faces New Trial Bid and Arrest of Judgment

Attorney A M Matthews filed motions for arrest of judgment and a new trial in the George Kern murder case. He alleges the prosecutor knew of a confession by the real perpetrator and failed to disclose it, claiming the first degree verdict should be set aside. Kent previously faced two trials, with the second yielding a first degree murder verdict and life sentence.

Wife Dead Husband Missing Marine Couple In Fatal Gas Scene

A 32 year old wife was beaten to death with a hammer in a gas filled apartment. A neighbor found the couple's two year old daughter semi conscious from fumes. Husband S Sgt Oren E Cleveland 38, was due at the depot in Philadelphia after 72 hour leave.

E Bond Sales Near Goal in Fort Pitt Area

In the Fort Pitt area of 19 counties sales of E bonds reached 72.5 percent of the $61,280,000 quota as the drive nears its December 31 close. Purchases totaled $1,889,400, boosting optimism the target may be met in two weeks.

United States Backs Polish Frontiers Plan Amid War Rifts

Last Rites Today for Pfc Ira Weighley

Last rites for Pfc Ira Eugene Weighley of Meyersdale will be held today at 2 30 pm at the Charles R Hauger funeral home. The Somerset American Legion post will conduct military rites at Husband cemetery and present the flag draped casket to the deceased’s mother. Weighley, veteran of campaigns in the south Pacific, died of sepsis after being wounded in Palau and in a head injury. He had written his father of a furlough home and praised the U S Marines.

Snow Storm Unlike That Of Last Week

Fresh snows piled on ice encrusted drifts from last week causing travel hazards across western Pennsylvania and parts of the state. The weather bureau warned of light falls and no repeat of the deadly storm that killed 21. Alfred Bender 15 died in Pittsburgh after a sled crash.

Fresh Snow Covers Roof Garden and Somerset Streets

A three inch snowfall Monday and more snow overnight blanketed Roof Garden and Somerset, hindering travel and shoveling efforts. U S Casualties in European Operations Total 258,124

The War Department reported U S ground forces casualties in France the Lowlands and the German border region totaled 258,124 up to December 1. Included were 44,143 killed 189,118 wounded and 24,863 missing. Air force losses not counted. November casualties were 57,775 possibly covering prior months.
