Bus with 43 pupils struck by empty truck near Somerset
A bus carrying 43 pupils from St. Peters Parochial School was hit by an empty tractor trailer on Route 219, three miles north of Somerset. One student, 9 year old Douglas Baird, sustained a head bump. another pupil escaped injury. The driver of the tractor trailer Gordon Tomb, 22, and the bus driver Douglas West, 25, were named. Damages were estimated at 150 dollars to the truck and 70 dollars to the bus. The trailer was empty and the truck had stopped when it struck the bus at about 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Richard Earl Wright 624 South Center Ave Somerset retired Dec 1 after 25 years with the Pennsylvania Department of Highways. Born in Altamont Maryland he recounts 1920s coal work by hand and a six to seven foot vein. He worked 1939 1957 for the Turnpike Commission building the Somerset area highway shed before retirement due to health. He and wife Thelma Eisler have six children and several affiliations.
