Australia Prime Minister Feared Dead Amid Beach Search
Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared during a swim at Portsea 31 miles south of Melbourne. A massive search with police, ambulance crews, divers, and military units was mounted, with helicopters, boats, and ten divers arriving from Sydney. Holt usually swam at Portsea. his friend Alan Stewart reported Holt dived and vanished beyond sight. Police and aides expressed grim expectations as Mrs Holt traveled to Portsea.

Harvey Bittner is observed as Confluence’s oldest resident turning 100 at his daughter Bessie Umbel’s home. He walks daily to downtown Confluence to the drug store, avoids snow, enjoys radio news and his pipe, and remains active despite age. Born near Rockwood on December 18 1867 he is the last of 14 siblings.

Captain Philip A. Valentine 31 of Shreveport Louisiana was killed December 3 at Binh Son base camp when debris from a hostile satchel charge struck him. He had served in Vietnam since June 17 1967 and was due to return to the United States June 18 1968. Survived by widow Donna Walding Valentine and two daughters Susan Elizabeth 6 and Phylis Anne 5. Parents Rudy P and Ida Heil Valentine live in Shreveport.
