Somerset youths from numerous colleges and universities across the country prepare to spend the Christmas break at home. Students from Penn State, Temple, Franklin and Marshall, Pitt, and many smaller schools join families in Somerset County as they travel from Maine to Florida for holiday travel and exams.
Several hundred attended the Christmas party at Oakhurst Tea room Tuesday evening hosted by Ernest Baker. The decor featured greens and bulbs while guests gathered greens from the countryside. George Jones of Johnstown decorated and played piano as Billy Merle and his Tune Toppers performed in the Top of the Pines room.
Dr and Mrs Charles I Shaffer of Somerset State hospital hosted a dinner for 26 members of the Spanish American War Veterans and auxiliary of Somerset county. The event featured Christmas decor, a tree centerpiece, games and music, with new auxiliary officers named including Nellie Ayres as president and Cora Gohn as senior vice president.
The American Legion auxiliary hosted a social evening for about 150 post members. A buffet dinner featured flowers and candle decor, with acts including a tape dance, clown routine, Carmen Miranda number, hunting act, tap dance, and carol singing led by Miss Maria Luteri. Santa Claus distributed gifts to the men.
The Susannah Wesley Bible class held its Christmas party in Calvary Church Wednesday evening for members and their husbands. There was no business session. The program featured the Christmas story in pictures words and song. Gifts were exchanged and refreshments served. Mrs W W Westfall is teacher.
Mrs James Houston was elected president of the Presbyterian church Women s Bible class at its December meeting in Mrs Roy Mankamier s home with Miss Elea nor McElroy as assistant hostess. Other officers include Mrs Mary Kearns vice president secretary Mrs P G Saylor treasurer Co C McDowell teacher and Mrs Helen Dimm assistant. Eighteen members attended.
The Junior Hospital auxiliary outlines decorations ticket sales and entertainment for its annual Christmas dance at the Somerset Country Club. Proceeds fund Somerset Community hospital supplies and equipment. This year Miss Jane Hoffman leads plans with Dick Johnson's Berlin orchestra.
Mr and Mrs Paul Huston of Tacoma Washington extend Christmas wishes to the Somerset American and friends in Somerset for a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
Real estate transfers recorded in Somerset County list multiple pairs with $1 consideration including Shumaker to Ogline in Jenners Milford Shade and Conemaugh townships, Ward to Wingard and other deeds. A marriage license application was filed for Robert Rayman and Doris Long in Somerset.
Additional Christmas contributions for the Children’s Aid society were reported Wednesday. Names include Mrs. Lloyd Miller of Somerset, R. D. G-cash, Mrs. Theodore Straub cash, Mrs. J. R. Hemminger cash, and Mrs. Warren G. Ferner cash.
Copy for Christmas programs must be at the Somerset American office by Monday December 22 or earlier. Copy should be typewritten double spaced on one side only. Programs are often held Sunday and some pastors have agreed to submit copy days before for publication by Saturday's issue.
Mrs H H Statler was elected president of the women's auxiliary to the Salisbury Fire Company at its recent meeting. Other officers include Mrs Bruce Fisher as vice president and Mrs C M May as secretary. Elizabeth Butler serves as assistant and Edward Newman as treasurer. Butler chairs the flower committee with Jane Hutzel Edward Shunk and H C Beal assisting. Mrs Harry Fate is recorder.
Mrs. James L. Brant hosted the E. O. W. club and guests for lunch and a Christmas party at the Ferner hotel with bridge on the mezzanine. The O. N. T. club and spouses gathered there for dinner and card games with gift exchanges.
Somerset friends of Edward Scull learn he is recuperating from spine operation performed December 10 at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. He is a senior in Jefferson Medical School and will remain hospitalized over the holiday season.
Mrs. Charles F. Uhl has returned to her West Union Street home after a week with her daughters Miss Henrietta Uhl and Miss Allison Uhl in New York City. Also visiting Mrs. John S. Milholland and Miss Eleanor McElroy are Miss Mary Moore and Miss Elizabeth Ruthlege of Newville, viewing a full line of Christmas cards at Dusenberry's.
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad uses its 90 foot holly tree near Jackson Maryland to distribute holiday spirit. Sprigs will be worn by over 3,000 employes including crews and ticket sellers during Christmas week. The century old tree stands on a one acre plot purchased in 1930 with a protective steel fence and ongoing trackman care.
Admissions list includes Mr and Mrs John Mack of Somer set parents of a daughter and Mr and Mrs Ray Zeigler of Stoystown parents of a son. Other entries note surgeries and medical discharges for Cyde Tunstall and medicals for Mrs John Lapine, William Pershow, Mrs Guy Kenemore, Mrs Leon Skorupski, Wayne Foy, Ida Williams, Ronald Berkebile, Mrs George Heiple.
An elderly Toledo couple Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Ditmyer and their daughter in law Loretta Osinski were found dead of gunshot wounds in their home. Osinski's two boys, ages 2 and 3, were hospitalized from malnutrition and exposure after the triple slaying. Detective Capt. Ralph Murphy said the estranged husband James Osinski, 37, is being sought for questioning.
Tonight at 8 Miss Elizabeth Rinard directs a Christmas carol program by young voices at the high school. Admission is free and school patrons are welcome. The column also notes shopping trips, salon closures, and fashion trends as the holiday season approaches.

Johnstown dispatch reports Cambria county World War II veteran Joany Lawrence Westover, 39, shot and amputated his leg on his back porch after years of pain from a New Guinea injury. Surgeons at Spangler hospital say the mangled leg was removed above the knee, leaving him critically ill and complaining of inadequate disability relief.
The report details a man described by Patrolman Coleman as having at least five wives. It lists wives in 1936, 1945, 1946 with locations in Oakdale Louisiana, Middleton, and Belle Vernon Pennsylvania, then a girl named Marge in Roxy Mississippi, and finally Gertrude Fear in Brattleboro Vermont.
