Pike Cost Increase Raises Harrisburg to Pittsburgh Highway

Harrisburg to Pittsburgh all weather highway costs may reach 70 million dollars from an initial 61 million as a banking syndicate offers 10 million in bonds. Officials say reasons for the rise will be explained after a commission meeting. No state funds are involved beyond a PWA grant of 29.25 million and RFC bond purchases totaling 35 million.

Friedens Man Killed By Freight Train

William Thomas 43 of Friedens died on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad right of way near Friedens when a freight train passed. Officials call it an accidental death after indications he may have fallen while riding or trying to hop the train. His body was found about 5 a m and dragged roughly 500 feet. Funeral services were held in Somerset with burial at Green Lick cemetery.

Pittsburgh Youth Killed by Drunken Driver

Sidney Slone, 22, of Pittsburgh, was killed yesterday in a truck collision at an East End street intersection. A city physician said the truck driver was drunk.

Senior Auxiliary Gifts Somerset Hospital Modern Laundry

Somerset Community Hospital receives a new modern laundry system donated by the Senior Auxiliary. A single room operation with automatic controls processes up to 75 sheets at a time, speed and sanitation improved, and towels and linens come out dry and sterile. The equipment was funded entirely by the Senior Auxiliary, a volunteer group representing local organizations.

Harold Irvine aged 35 died in a cabin fire in Corydon township where he lived alone. Neighbors believe a cigarette started the blaze.

Finns say two Russian forces surrounded near Suomussalmi Tolvajarvi

General Vallenius tells Swedish reporters that about 20 000 Russians, split into two forces of 10 000 each, are encircled near Suomussalmi and Tolvajarvi in central Finland amid days of heavy fighting. He notes suspected Soviet tanks crossed into Norway, a claim Norwegian officials deny.

Franklin Goes On Trial Today

Benjamin Franklin, a suspended state police corporal, goes on trial January 8 in Monroe County for murder and manslaughter in the death of Joan Stevens a Nesquehoning 14 year old girl. Judge Samuel E Schull will preside after Judge-elect James C McCready disqualified himself. Franklin is free on 10000 bail. The girl was found shot near her home last June during an interrogation about a bank robbery plot. Franklin says he acted in self defense as the pistol turned out to be a toy.

Motorists Bumped Enroute to Somerset

Mr and Mrs Louis Leach and their children Alma Louise Louis and Wayne Sprouse of Brownsville were visiting Mr and Mrs Henry B Reiley on North Rosina Avenue. Their car was bumped in heavy traffic near Connellsville airport and delayed for several hours while repairs were made.

British Battle Dead in Graf Spee Clash

London reports three British cruisers clashed with the German pocket battleship Graf Spee. Seventy two killed and thirty wounded overall with Exeter reading sixty one dead and twenty three wounded on the thirteenth. Ajax suffered seven dead and five wounded while Graf Spee had thirty six killed and sixty wounded. A temporary hospital ship departs Buenos Aires to aid Exeter.

The air ministry said German aircraft appeared over several points of the east British coast in the late afternoon. British anti aircraft guns opened fire and fighters chased the planes out to sea. No air raid warnings were sounded and there was brief anti aircraft fire in the Humber district.

Graf Spee Sunk After Battle Near Montevideo

Nazi pocket battleship Graf Spee was blown up and sunk off Montevideo after failing to break out to sea. Captain Langsdorff and crew evacuated aboard small boats before the wreck settled in 25 feet of water three miles from shore amid flames. The Tacoma was later detained as authorities planned internment for Graf Spee crew.
