President Eisenhower urged a big military reserve plan arguing the nation is prepared to win a major war. He hinted at cuts in active forces and avoided confirming reports of a 100000-man army reduction and Marine division pullout from Korea.
Secretary of Defense Charles E. Wilson announced a cut in military manpower for the coming fiscal year with the June 1955 strength expected to be below the 3,047,000 plan. He emphasized reductions would be mainly in the army but not exclusively, and noted timing matters for a sound reserve program.
Four Pennsylvania Railroad workers face grand jury action for stealing merchandise from warehouses and railroad property. William Allen and Joseph Krason of Pittsburgh are held on larceny, Rudolph Thomas of Homestead and Lyman Crawford of Wilkinsburg are held on receiving stolen goods. Testimony linked items to a lumber company and two food distributors, with police locating surplus free government food in Allens home. Allen claims he obtained the food legitimately while unemployed.
J J Yuska of Somerset was found not guilty by a county court jury on charges of operating a vehicle under the influence after a crash on East Main Street injuring Lizzie Shaffer. The trial also saw dismissal of related stop scene and identity charges. Other actions included guilty plea for leaving scene and restitution order for stolen property. A jury was later drawn for Roy Kinsinger assault case.
A stray screech owl perched on a bald eagle statue in the Somerset court room astonished spectators during a traffic case session. Pvt Thomas Sterner fired a .22 into the bird at noon, knocking it to the floor. janitor John Smith helped subdue it. Deputy Jake Pyle secured the weapon. officials noted a missing “flying arrow” disposal contraption and offered a 25 reward for its return.

Albert J. Lajovie of Cleveland was transferred from Somerset county jail to Cambria county authorities after a $250 armed robbery fine. Glenn S. Rouser of Johnstown was sent to Bedford county authorities for burglary and larceny. Delwyn Querry of Johnstown was released to Cambria county authorities on burglary and larceny charges. David Carr of Walnut Grove, brought from Cambria county jail on burglary and larceny charges, was returned to Cambria county jail.
Health authorities seek to identify the source of 12 trichinosis cases in the Clinton Lycoming area. Doctors say illness often comes from undercooked pork. Proper cooking or freezing pork for 24 hours kills the causative germ.
