Dispatches from Hanoi say U S jet squadrons staged a large raid on Hanoi and outskirts after monsoon clouds broke. Tass cited about 50 planes hitting residential areas while Hanoi News Agency reported four planes shot down and ground fire downing three.
President Johnson, addressing a bipartisan East Room audience, praised good cross party actions while signing a bill expanding the Flammable Fabrics Act to cover all wearing apparel and interior furnishings. He urged Capitol Hill to act on consumer protections, noting women will demand safer clothing and home goods. The measure allows new federal flammability standards and administrative updates as fabrics evolve.
Rockwood Fire Department elected Don Younkin president to succeed David Kusch at the regular meeting December 13 at the Fire Hall. Officers include vice president Robert Morgan Jr, secretary Ray Carpenter, treasurer Fred Keen, fire chief J C Miller, first assistant Robert Morgan Sr, second assistant Emrys Jones, truck foreman Ray Sterner, assistant Roger Romesburg, with five on the standing committee Charles Hostetler Harold Yutzy Irvin Brant David Kusch and Leo Hay. All officers will be installed at the next meeting later this month.

The U.S. withholds recognition and Britain cuts diplomatic ties as Greece faces isolation. regent takes power while Col. Papadopoulos promises a constitutional monarchy with a regent.
Steve H. Corley, 26, of Chattanooga Tennessee, was transferred from Somerset Community Hospital to Pittsburgh Presbyterian Hospital at about 12 noon Thursday. He was the sole survivor of a severe plane crash near Seven Springs late Monday night. Corley remains in serious condition with burns covering his body.
Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention delegates rejected a motion to shorten their Christmas recess. The vote kept the recess Dec 21 to Jan 2, with adjournment until next Monday. Delegate Shoemaker argued the 48 day deadline to finish constitutional revisions remaining by Feb 29 is tight and staffing uncertain.
Negotiators for General Motors and the United Auto Workers pressed toward a nationwide pact covering 380,000 GM workers with a midnight deadline and a news blackout. No strike timetable was set, and talks at American Motors also advanced as UAW and AMC negotiators moved to replace the expired contract.
Miss Sherry Wright, 17 daughter of Mr and Mrs Ralph Wright Addison, won Maple Princess in Turkeyfoot Valley Area High School contest at Harnedsville. Runner up Miss Irma Pullin 17 of Grantsville. Other contestants included Miss Sherry Lint Miss Linda Reeves and Miss Linda La Vecchia. Wright to compete for Queen Maple XXI in February at Johnstown.
Senator Russell Long moved to pass the House compromise on a voice vote, triggering protests from Senate leader Mike Mansfield. A second vote is set for 11 a.m. Friday, delaying any filibuster and ending extended debate.
Nelson Pritts of Rockwood R D 1 died at Somerset Community Hospital an hour after a car struck him on South Edgewood Avenue near Edgewood Grove. Driver William Tedrow 38 of Rockwood R D 1 said he did not see Pritts until late. Pritts, about 56, suffered a fractured skull and left hip among injuries. his body was sent to Wood Funeral Home.

Somerset and Bedford counties completed the organization of a mental health and mental retardation board Thursday evening in the Somerset County courthouse. The eight member Somerset and five member Bedford board is led by Henry B. Reiley Jr. as president with Robert Foy as vice president Myrtle Hayes as secretary and Earl H. Shaffer as treasurer. The president appointed three committees including personnel chaired by Myrtle Hayes with James Mayer Richard Weimert and Rev Hillis G Berkey. the program committee includes James Klein as chairman with Dr Paul E Berkebile and Mrs See. Area Retardation on Pg. 2

The year saw 141 property damage claims, with 135 settled amicably totaling 296576, and 6 via viewers totaling 82015.75. No jury actions occurred. Across Highway District 9 including six counties, payments totaled 721518.27 for 289 claims.
