President Johnson’s announced cuts are largely deferrals and delays rather than real reductions. Federal outlays for 1967 fall by less than $2 billion with most postponed to 1968, notably in highway and other programs, while military costs may push the 1967 budget higher.
In Saigon reports the U S Command says military targets were hit while Hanoi civilian bombing claims remain unconfirmed. An artillery mishap northwest of Tay Ninh City killed two U S soldiers and wounded two as explosions damaged homes and a rice mill near Saigon.
Variable cloudiness and a little warmer in Western Pennsylvania on Thursday and Friday. Highs Thursday around 33 with gradual warming into Friday. Moderate winds and minor precipitation not indicated.
Miss Alexis Hostetler a 17 year old Meyersdale student was named Maple Princess at a Meyersdale Area Schools contest. Her talent featured excerpts from The Unsinkable Molly Brown and a pink and white promenade gown. The senior plans to study English education in college.
Berlin Fire Department held its meeting Monday night electing officers for 1967 led by Ernest Walker as Fire Chief for the 20th straight year. New officers include Victor Harris as President and Clyde Miller as 1st Assistant Chief with committees named and Christmas decorations planned for Main Street.
Newly released 1944 documents show President Franklin D. Roosevelt as the staunch foe of unconditional surrender, resisting British and Soviet cautions and insisting Germany must be defeated before any easing terms. The records also reveal his push to bring American troops home promptly and his firm stance on postwar outcomes.
President Johnson aide Bill Moyers will resign Feb 1 to become publisher and COO of Newsday in Long Island New York. George Christian will succeed him as press secretary. Jake Jacobsen will return to private law practice in Austin Texas after 20 months as Johnson's legislative counsel. Moyers cites family obligations and stresses journalism as public service.
Emerson Suder of Meyersdale R D 2 will be honored with the honorary Keystone Farmer degree at the 1967 Pennsylvania Farm Show. He is among 300 recipients including business people and educators for promoting agriculture and agricultural education. Suder, a Brown Swiss cattle producer, leads the Somerset County Fair Association and helped expand FFA exhibits at the fair. A son previously earned the Keystone Farmer's Degree in 1960.
Mrs. John F. Kennedy says she will seek a court injunction to stop the book Death of a President by William Manchester from being published. She calls the work tasteless and distorted and cites violation of her wishes and privacy of her children. Her lawyers plan a suit within 48 to 72 hours to delay publication.
The State disbursed about 24.131 million into Somerset County in the year ending June 30, 1965 per Legislative Budget and Finance Committee records. Education led with 5.951 million for public education, highway outlays reached 3.849 million, and other programs covered parks, health, and infrastructure under multi million contracts and subsidies.
London AP reports Dr. Robert F Hobson of London University warned in an appended essay to a Church of England report that women priests could distract male parishioners. He quoted terms like disgusting and revolting used by some women dreading altar gender.
Braucher was elected president of the Somerset County Bar Association at the annual meeting in the courthouse. He succeeds retiring president William S. Livengood Jr. James C Courtney Jr. was named to the executive committee, replacing Robert Keim. Other officers include vice president Robert Critchfield and secretary treasurer Robert Philson.
Dr. Carl Coppolino testified he acted on mercy not murder in 1963 when neighbor Lt. Col. William Farber died. He admitted an affair with Farber’s wife and hypnotizing her on two occasions while denying plans to marry or harm Farber.
