The governor signs a new law changing how protests to zoning changes are filed in Somerset County second class townships. It retains a 20 percent owner threshold but defines protesting owners as those representing land area or 20 percent of the parcel's abutting periphery. See LEGISLATION On Page 2.
Officers of the Somerset County Bar Association were elected at the annual meeting held Tuesday night at Somerset Courthouse. Robert W. Critchfield became president, Tay lor B. Coffroth vice president, and Robert M. Philson secretary treasurer. A M Matthews and Nathaniel A Barbera were elected to three year terms on the Executive Committee.
B52 bombers attacked a suspected stamping ground 15 miles southwest of Dak To in the central highlands near the Cambodian frontier. The raid targeted an infiltration route from Laos with intelligence noting multiple regiments operating across the frontier. Monsoon weather limited fighter-bombers to 88 North Vietnam missions and a dog fight near Haiphong yielded no hits.
A new world gold market strategy seeks to shield the dollar by channeling sales through the official London pool and freezing out speculators. France faces potential burden as its central bank left the pool, risking pressure in Charles de Gaulle’s anti dollar stance. Central bankers from the United States Britain Switzerland West Germany Italy Belgium and the Netherlands met in Basel to coordinate the move.
The November unemployment rate fell to 3.9 percent, marking the largest monthly decline in over six years. About three million people were unemployed, with gains in nonfarm payrolls driven by government and manufacturing. Adults and teens drove most of the shift, while nonwhites saw a lower rate than in October.

Forbes High School received a Governor's Award at the Governors Conference on Traffic Safety in Harrisburg for a 1966-67 campaign in Kantner to eliminate traffic hazards. Eight students surveyed communities and bus routes, coordinated with state and local officials, photographed hazards, and led road improvements.
Two people died in a head on collision on Route 601 two miles north of Boswell between Boswell and Jerome. A third person, David Lee McVicker, 16, of Boswell RD 1, was hospitalized with severe facial injuries and listed in serious condition. McVicker, a Jenner Boswell High School junior, drove a 1963 model car. the Koontz car was a 1966 model. Police reported both cars traveling in opposite directions and fate of the Koontz occupants undetermined as Coroner Halverson and Trooper Stevens continued investigations.
Public Health Service researchers unveiled a new artificial heart device described as a major advance. The fist-sized machine would implant in the chest, aims for smooth blood flow to reduce clots, and has only been tested in calves. The team, led by Marshall Turner and Dr. William Pierce, began work in 1965 with implants starting in 1966.
Western Pennsylvania notes a cloudy mild Thursday with highs in the 40s. Friday continues cloudy with rain likely and mild temperatures.
William Saylor won first prize of 25 dollars in Meyersdale High School Voice of Democracy, with Gary DeVoe second and Richard Stratten third. The event was hosted by local Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies Auxiliary, with 11 students competing and district contest implications noted. Saylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Saylor, plans Westminster College after graduation and holds multiple school honors.
