Convicted minister defends tax resistance over war
Rev. Maurice F. McCrackin of Cincinnati was found guilty of failing to answer a federal tax summons. A jury deliberated 19 minutes. Judge John H. Druffel sentenced him to six months in prison and a 250 dollar fine. He spoke after sentencing praying for an end to war preparations. The judge rebuked his pacifist stance calling it traitorous. McCrackin, who entered court in a wheelchair, had refused taxes funding military actions and conducted a 15 day fast in jail.
