Nelson Rockefeller resigns after 15 years as New York governor to devote himself to two bipartisan national commissions. Lt. Gov. Malcolm Wilson will assume the governorship as Rockefeller denies immediate presidential ambitions, citing ongoing public service obligations.
Shanksville-Stonycreek School Board votes 5-3 to discontinue the new elementary school project and to interview superintendent candidates, with not renewing Hillard’s contract. New board members oppose the project and fuel-saving measures cut nonessential evening activities amid heated debate.
The Somerset Bypass of New Route 219 opened in freezing weather with Transportation Secretary Jacob Kassab at a ribbon cutting. Sections run from the Somerset Interchange to Old Route 219 south of Somerset Borough. Kassab urged bipartisan support for highway funding and predicted a two year look ahead for further 219 work while noting environmental and planning steps.
State Rep. John Murtha of Westmont campaigns in Somerset for the 12th District race. He cites energy and inflation as key issues, defends campaign spending at 43000, notes Watergate is not a campaign issue, and discusses Bethlehem Steel job cuts and Route 219 as measures to keep young people in the district.

They hope to reach 25,000 to travel to Limerick Ireland for the St Patrick’s Day parade and possible Scotland visit.
