Textile workers seek 20 hour wage raises in Philadelphia
About 14 000 workers in 78 woolen and worsted mills around Philadelphia will press for a 20 cent an hour raise starting next week. Joseph Hueter of the Philadelphia joint board Textile Workers of America CIO said negotiations will be held in Boston for 80 000 workers in the woolen and worsted industry. Two miners die after mine accident at Acosta
Ralph Phillippi 42 of Stoystown dies at Somerset Community Hospital after injuries from a Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co. accident at Acosta. Chalmers H Goodlin, a Westmoreland county native, flew the army's first rocket plane yesterday. His mother recalls he was born to fly, skipped high school to study planes, earned a pilot's license at 17, joined the RCAF in 1941, earned wings before Pearl Harbor, served in the U S Navy Air Force, then worked as a Bell Aircraft production test pilot in Niagara Falls.

Explosion Destroys Truck Fire Near North Somerset Turnpike
A truck carrying dynamite or caps exploded after bursting into flames Monday at 9 pm near the north Somerset turnpike entrance. Firefighters from Somerset Volunteer Fire Co. saved adjacent buildings as the blast demolished the truck and damaged nearby vehicles and a building housing Gilmour and Blattenberger Construction. No injuries were reported though several crews were deafened by the blast and police kept crowds back. Damage is estimated in the thousands.
