Romeo rode with Wesley McClemens of Blough station in a car that collided with John Benny Jr of The Hill, in which the Bene family were passengers.

Melvin Romesburg, a farmer near Markleton in Lower Turkeyfoot township, was critically wounded when a friend, J. Donald Siesky of Connellsville, accidentally discharged a double-barrel shotgun during target practice. Romesburg was rushed to Confluence hospital in serious condition with a leg wound and blood loss. County Detective H. C. Jacobs investigated the incident.

The cruiser Tuscaloosa and two destroyer escorts paused at an unidentified island to deliver mail to President Roosevelt. He stayed aboard to check mail while the party briefed the coast in small boats. Mail was returned to the plane for Miami before the voyage continued. William Henry Bender, Berlin’s grand old man and Somerset county’s last surviving Civil War veteran, died at his North Street home after months of illness at age 95. Born in 1845 in Zanesville Ohio, he enlisted in 1863 with the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry, served at Gettysburg and multiple campaigns, was captured briefly, and later rode dispatches to President Lincoln. He resumed carpentry after the war, helped build many Berlin homes and churches, and remained a local historian and Memorial Day participant until recent years.
