Mourning death ends trial in King County jail
On trial for a 10 year old murder, 44 year old Earl Mayer committed suicide in King County jail by suffocation with belt and paper. Jurors had just heard testimony about Mayer and Mrs Smith luring James Bassett to a residence, beating him with a hammer, and dismembering the body. The body was never recovered.
