Somerset endures a deep cold spell with three straight days of subfreezing highs and nights near zero. Weather Observer David Grove notes five nights with readings around eight above at midnight and 25 degrees as the day’s high, with no 40 degree readings since November 29.
Severe cold and heavy snow hit Pennsylvania with 18 inches in Chalk Hill and four foot drifts in Somerset and Cambria. Dozens labor to clear roads as deaths from exposure and accidents mount, including a 15 year old killed in Johnstown.
The cold wave swept into the South threatening citrus crops in northern Florida while upstate New York saw heavy snow squalls and six to seven foot drifts in Buffalo area. New York City and region endured record cold with temperatures dipping to near 15. Widespread casualties and disruptions followed as coal trucks and transit faced closures and demand surged. Maritime and air routes across the West also faced storms and typhoon conditions in the Pacific.
The House labor committee approved a move to place wage and hour decisions under a single administrator in the labor department, scrapping the five member board. The plan would form industry committees with employer and worker reps plus public members to advise the administrator, who may approve or reject their proposals and reconstitute the committee if needed.
Witnesses representing consumers denounced the new government fixed soft coal prices set to take effect December 16. The smokeless producers district board requests changes to the price schedule, while the industry weighs legal action if demands aren’t met.
Pilot Al K. Young formerly of Somerset airport and his passenger Dr. James E. Rishell from Johnstown arrived home from the Miami winter air races after flying blind from Winchester. They landed at Somerset and joined the Alligator Club after a hazardous Everglades flight. En route they encountered a heavy snow storm forcing down several planes.
Lieut. Edward P. Burke, 24, died when his aircraft crashed and burned during a weather observation flight. Burke, a West Point graduate, hailed from Helena, Montana.
The government announced a $23 million monthly WPA spending rise to create 350,000 extra jobs as debate grows over President Roosevelt’s budget balance goal. Hopkins said no deficit request is planned for now, while lawmakers weigh further relief needs and CCC funding.

He seeks original jurisdiction and asks for the case to be removed to Dauphin court for an early decision while the Department of Labor and Industry braces for a forthcoming brief supporting constitutionality on economic grounds. He notes prior doubts about the bill but says it must be defended as a matter of state police power amid anticipated interventions from labor groups.
Somerset Pennsylvanial liquor control board store will move to 242 West Main Street the former Walter Hoff man undertaking building with no fixed moving date. The Somerset store has operated in the Goodstein Ball building basement on South Center Avenue for four years. Ernest E. Barnett manages the store.
Harrisburg reports the Greenville township school district in Somerset county won authorization from the Department of Internal Affairs to float a $12,500 bond issue for a new school.
The US gunboat Panay with embassy officials aboard fled up the Yangtze as Japanese warplanes bombed Nanking and the Pukow railhead. Bombs exploded in the water between ship and shore, fires raged along the riverfront, and embass y staff prepared to evacuate.

Erie police arrested Frank Modeski a 19 year old escapee sought for seven weeks in a string of hold ups and home robberies. Police chief George J Christoph said Modeski had been an inmate at Polk F Institute since May and claimed to live in boats and caves along the bay front.
The charred bodies of Mrs. Glenn Large, 27, and her five small children were recovered from the ruins of their farm home near Oregon Illinois after a fire destroyed the house.

Judge William M. Hargest ruled that Governor Earle erred by blocking the Pioneer Materials Co from state business. The case, brought by receiver P. G. Baldwin of Meadville, seeks to force the state to award contracts from the company’s low bids for 23 000 tons on June 15 and 3 000 tons on July 2 and October 27.
James Haynes aged 22 of Boswell was jailed for five days by Justice of the Peace Dalton J. Holsapple after a hearing. State police reported Haynes operated his car without an operator's license at Jennertown sub station.
