Windber Borough was barred from enforcing a $25 per day license on X rated movie showings at Cinema 56. Judge Coffroth ruled the ordinance exceeds municipal police power and regulates nothing.
Decorations rise for a kickoff on Route 31 at the Saylor Farm as community groups raise funds and supplies for a temporary dog shelter. Jamesway donates hose and food, while donors Tae Ling Susie Wong and others send checks and gifts to back the project.
The Labor Department reports 4.2 million unemployed, a decline of over 200 000 from October and 5.2 percent jobless, the lowest in more than two years. Stein sees continued gains as economy expands. average hourly earnings hold at 3.73 while weekly pay slips to 138.01.
Take Route 31 east from the Diamond in Somerset past the State Police Barracks and the Mental Hospital. United Airlines Flight 553 with 61 aboard, including Congressman George Collins' office member, crashed while attempting to land at Midway in sleet and snow. A Pittsburgh commuter bus struck an abutment on a bridge, injuring 10 people. The Penn Lincoln Parkway and Parkway East saw heavy closures and long delays as responders cleared the scene and traffic in the Pittsburgh area backed up to Monroeville.
Robert Mason Lambert nineteen of Shanksville was found guilty of possession and giving a dangerous drug by a six by six jury after a three day trial. The can controversy involved LSD placed in an orange soda can consumed by Roger Young of Somerset. The court scheduled sentencing later with jury recommending leniency.
Space Center Houston reports Apollo 17 astronauts Cernan Schmitt and Evans fired their command ship engine from 147000 miles away to steer toward a Sunday lunar rendezvous. The two second burn placed the craft on a 70 mile lunar orbit, while ice particles formed from dumped waste water and urine.
