About 2900 county miners are idle as 1518 United Mine Workers go on strike at midnight. 1387 non union miners plan to file benefit claims at the Somerset office with 251 filing on day one and more expected Wednesday. Union miners rely on a pension fund while non union workers draw unemployment benefits as legislation raises the base to 4200 and funds are bolstered.
In Harrisburg the House approved an income tax hike from 2.0 to 2.2 percent and corporate tax from 9.5 to 10.5 percent, both expiring in two years. The vote reached 101 briefly before Rep. Fred Trello switched to 102, securing passage in exchange for probes into university salaries and benefits. Senate action looming with Gov Shapp aiming to rally nontax senators and a separate bill to raise the gasoline tax to 11 cents per gallon.
