Somerset joint board picks Doolittle as president in meeting
George Doolittle of Somerset R D I was elected president of the Somerset joint board of school directors in a Monday night meeting at the high school library. He succeeds Milo Musgrave, who served as the first president for one and a half years. Musgrave commended board cooperation and urged continued progress by civic groups. William E. Griffith was reelected vice president, Stanley Hoffmann named secretary, and Lynn Dien replaced. New members joined the joint committee, and plans for financing new school buildings were discussed. The committee also approved weekend basketball for elementary boys and after school programs at Friedens, assigned to Robert Ward, with extra pay for playhouse staff. Pfrogner received permission to attend the National Science Teachers convention in Chicago. Repairs to a tunnel cover at the high school, damaged by a tractor trailer, were completed November 28. About 1,931 students participate in the accident insurance plan. In the prior borough meeting, Rev. J. F. Woodrow and A. J. Kerin were re elected president and vice president.

Two Airmen Injured in Turnpike Crash Near Somerset
Two airmen from Langley Air Force Base Virginia were injured when their car struck a guardrail on the Pennsylvania Turnpike two miles west of the Somerset interchange. James W. Lovell 21 of Betsey Kentucky in critical condition with leg and chest injuries. Herbert S. Shaw 23 of Sharon driver in fair condition with cuts and bruises. Both treated at Somerset Community Hospital. Police say Shaw fell asleep at the wheel. Property damage estimated at 800 dollars.

Major Kenneth O Felton, funeral held Monday afternoon, began military training from neighbor James L Hutchinson in Somerset R D 1 before graduating Somerset High School in 1940. Hutchinson, a World War I veteran, recalls Felton’s early questions about the army and notes Felton’s Pearl Harbor escape and crash in Louisiana while en route to an eastern port.
