County commissioners approved a gas lease with Amoco Production Co for about 170 acres at the Somerset County Airport paying 5 per acre for year one and 1 per acre thereafter with a one eighth royalty if gas or oil is found. The lease limits drilling but uses a pooling approach with royalty sharing if resources are discovered.
Bill Stanton says a skunk wandered into his garage and residents face legal limits. Officials warn it is illegal to keep or destroy the animal and even releasing it could violate health laws. Stanton describes failed attempts by welfare, stray pickup, and police to handle the situation.
A Moonies team had its solicitation permit revoked in Somerset Borough after police said they violated permit terms. About five or six members sold small candles after 5 pm, prompting complaints. the mayor had set a 5 pm cutoff and held a $25 permit fee.
Somerset Borough Mayor William C. James says parking tickets issued between Monday and Christmas Eve may be excused if the holder brings a proof of purchase from a merchant of at least $2 to the Borough Police Office. The offer covers one ticket per car and requires a new proof of purchase for each additional ticket.

James Jury age 51 of Hollsopple died after losing control of his tractor trailer on U S Route 30 near Stoystown. It cites training and radar data issues at the Pittsburgh Weather Service Forecast Office and recommends better rainfall reporting, alternative communications, trained on call staff, clearer warning directives, more drills, and voluntary observers.
Weather and travel advisory describe several inches of snow in the Laurel Mountain area with flurries, blowing and drifting snow, and high temperatures in the teens to low 20s. A Wednesday morning advisory warns of 2 to 3 inches more, with 80 percent snow chance and northwest winds 15 to 30 mph.
