President Eisenhower arrives in Rome for a rainy first day of his 11 nation tour. He meets Italian leaders to discuss cold war strategy and European defenses plus a gala reception for about 3 000 guests.
A small Italian wine truck tangled with the Eisenhower motorcade on the Appian Way near Rome. The narrow road prevented passing for about a mile until motorcycle police diverted the truck and allowed the convoy to proceed.
Mike Plaugher, six, born without a left hand and with a malformed right hand, smiles as doctors at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital evaluate him for an artificial hand. A team assessment will follow with plastic surgery planned, and state health officials may cover the treatment costs.

Somerset borough Police Chief Fred W. Pyle spoke at the Rotary Club luncheon at the Somerset Country Club. He said small town officers must be versatile and can shift from traffic duty to rescue or investigation, noting a town with one officer is as good as none. The Somerset force currently has eight men and one woman. Pete Dumbauld introduced the program.
