Hooversville Store Ruined By Flames
Hooversville volunteers and six surrounding departments battled a seven hour fire that gutted the Daniel Shaffer and Sons hardware and furniture store and adjoining residence. Mrs Bertha Shaffer and three family members escaped in night clothing as flames spread from the basement through partitions. Losses exceed 25000 dollars with stock destroyed while warehouses at rear escaped. Firefighters faced ice bound water from the Stonycreek and zero degree temperatures as mines in the area paused to assist. Communications were knocked out by damaged lines, but efforts continued to salvage and reopen part of the business from a warehouse area north of Water street.

Miner Dies From Injuries In Coal Mine
Mike Gowarty 45, a Jenners Consolidation Coal miner, died about 8:30 am Wednesday at Somerset Community hospital after a rockfall November 22. Coroner F E Sass opened an investigation. Gowarty had been hospitalized since November 25. He was born August 15, 1894, son of John and Tillie Gowarty, survived by his widow Pearl and several children. Funeral at 9 Saturday in St Joseph's Catholic Church Jenners No 2, Jay O Hay in charge.
