About 300 activists among 18 000 students joined clashes on campus. Police arrested 20 after stone throwing and barricades. Acting president Hayakawa vowed to keep classes open amid ongoing campus violence. Mayor Alioto praised the police and Hayakawa.
AP reports 220 coal miners died last year as 1967 ranked among the safest years despite 500 federal mine shutdowns for imminent danger. West Virginia records 145 deaths after a November Mannington explosion, with 78 miners trapped and the state contributing over a quarter of the toll.
An engineer and brakeman were slightly injured in a derailment on the Baltimore and Ohio line five miles east of Confluence at 10 15 p m. The 100 car coal train halted after the rear car buckled, derailing the end car bound from Connellsville to Cumberland. Track clearance was expected between 3 and 4 a m.
London AP reports Britain's heart transplant program has ceased as doctors and relatives stop offering donor hearts. Donald Longmore of the National Heart Hospital says more than two patients have died due to lack of donors and several more may die without new donations. The hospital performed Britain's first heart transfer on May 3.
Bethlehem Steel Corp the nations second largest producer said it would raise galvanized steel sheet prices by 8 a ton effective Dec 16. U S Steel Corp and Republic Steel Corp announced matching increases while U S Steel also canceled a 25 per ton cut on hot rolled steel. Republic matched U S Steel on hot rolled sheets.
Senator Hart told Detroit auto show attendees that consumers often do not get their money's worth in auto repairs and urged three measures: state licensing of mechanics and shops, FTC probe into flat rate manuals as possible price fixing, and scrutiny by FTC or Justice Department of special repair rates to fleets and insurers. He noted manuals inflate charges by basing on manufacturer time and questioned subsidies to favored customers.
National Airlines Boeing 727 refueled under a hijacker's gun then flew to Havana with 28 passengers and seven crew. Cuban authorities allowed a quick return takeoff, and the jet, its crew, and passengers were bused to Varadero for a charter back to Miami. Flight originally planned from New York to Miami.

John Daniel Hemphill 22 of Bricktown New Jersey flew a stolen single engine Piper Cherokee 140 toward Kennedy Airport and ditched at sea after 50 miles off Norfolk coast. Coast Guard helicopter rescued him unharmed. he faces federal charges for transporting a stolen plane abroad and awaits return to Newark New Jersey.

State troopers report Harry J. Kirshner chased his wife Elizabeth 49 into a neighbor's house in Greensburg and beat her to death with a metal bar. He then returned home and phoned a priest and police. The couple, who argued over money at their Yukon home, were involved in a quarrel prior to the attack.
A man solicited for Paula Ann Pyle kidney transplant funds in Rockwood and Somerset claiming to raise money for a Paula Pyle Fund Drive. Police seek the heavy set man described by witnesses. organizers say no canvassing is authorized locally. The drive aims to raise about 30 000 dollars.
Israeli planes and artillery struck targets in northwest Jordan and northern Iraq after a midnight clash. A Jordanian spokesman said 14 civilians were killed and 18 wounded, while Israel accused Jordanian gunners of starting the exchange by firing on eight Israeli farm settlements. Irbid and nearby villages suffered damage, with 63 houses wrecked and 83 damaged. Three Jordanian settlements were reported as affected. Israel said its jets also attacked an Iraqi army division in northern Jordan.

No pre-induction physicals are planned for December, following a November schedule. A year-end tally shows 185 local draftees in 1968, plus 444 pre-induction physicals, distributed across months with December noting six inductees and none for physicals in that month.
