Floods after the Malpasset Dam breach near Frejus on the French Riviera killed 198 people and left 160 missing. Rescue teams suspended operations at dusk and planned to resume at dawn as entire areas lost electricity, water, gas, and rail links.
A group of air force officers seized five aircraft, including a passenger airliner, and flew into the interior of Brazil. The rebels, claiming a Communist infiltrated government, established a outpost in Aragarcas while authorities vow swift action. no hostages reported harmed.
Mickey Cohen was booked in Sherman Oaks on suspicion of murder after 41 year old Jack Whalen was shot dead at a restaurant. Police held Cohen and several companions for 48 hours for questioning while they search for a weapon and motive. Whalen had a police record dating to 1938 and was described by LAPD Chief Parker as a tough bookmaker who had clashed with top underworld figures.
The FCC ordered all radio and television stations to file sworn statements by Jan 4 covering payoffs or other considerations received by staff for unmarked paid broadcasts. The move aims to curb sneaky commercials and may trigger penalties including license loss. Public hearings will probe reguation of program content.
Pittsburgh Railroad company refused a union suggestion to submit the contract dispute to binding arbitration before the Monday strike deadline. C. D. Palmer called the idea unacceptable, saying no third party should decide. About 1,700 trolley and bus workers threaten to strike as wage talks continue. Federal and state mediators plan Friday talks with both sides.
A statewide civil defense test set for Monday December 7 will involve the state council and county and local civil defense groups. The drill runs 6 to 8 p.m. to test attack warning systems and public action signals with color coded warnings yellow blue red and white and public deafening signals as instructed.
Washington AP describes Col. William Draper, Eisenhower’s long time personal pilot, who flies the 600 mile an hour jet on a 19 day, 22,370 mile voyage. The crew includes Lt. Col. Thomas and Lt. Col. Puglisi. Draper demands perfection and preflights airports to study terrain and weather.
The Conemaugh Water Authority met in Davidsville and approved a 200000 program to revamp water lines in Jerome with a 100000 gallon storage reservoir. The project adds three and a half million gallons impounding facilities at South Fork and Benscreek, serves 700 customers, and includes metering mains. Neilan Engineers leads the revamp with Singer Deane Scribner as fiscal agents.
Evans City R D 2 resident Nephi Kennedy, 53, perishes in a Thursday blaze that destroys his four room frame house. Kennedy lived alone. Deputy Coroner A W Lehnerd cites a cigarette starting the couch fire.
The Steelworkers union urged President Eisenhower to appoint his inquiry board to propose a solution to the steel dispute. Union president David J. McDonald backed the president's call for a quick end to the conflict and said he would negotiate within the panel's framework. Eisenhower announced round the clock mediation instructions and Finnegan scheduled talks with industry and union leaders, while industry negotiator R. Conrad Cooper said the next move lay with the union.
The Labor Department reports this year as the worst strike year in modern times aside from 1946. October alone pushes man-days lost to 14 million and ten month total to 622 million, surpassing annual totals in all years since records began except 1946’s 116 million.
Two western Pennsylvania Democrats were named to head the 1960 registration drive. Frank N. Happ of Pittsburgh and Mrs. John E. Sloan of Clarion will lead efforts to overturn a Republican registration edge of about 69 000. Happ is a Democratic committee member from Allegheny county. Sloan is president of the Pennsylvania Federation of Democratic Women.
President Eisenhower flies out on a three week, 22 000 mile journey to 11 countries in a mission of peace and good will. He outlines mutual disarmament as a first step while stressing the need for U S military strength to defend freedom. He heads to Rome for the first stop with 21 aides aboard a jet amid farewell from Mrs Eisenhower.

Manager Mr Longridge and a second attendant staff the operation, with rest and utility rooms for staff and souvenirs for visitors.

Dennis Stahl will introduce December’s high school guest and give his farewell talk as November’s guest. Next week’s gathering moves to Tuesday at Oakhurst Tea Room at 6 30 p.m. for the three service clubs’ annual get-together.

Ohio Governor DiSalle and Pennsylvania Governor Lawrence arranged a verbal pact to allow Donna Hammond, a 26 year old inmate at Marysville Reformatory, to attend the funeral of her two children who drowned near Somerset. Hammond must return to Ohio by Monday noon.
