Frigid air grips Pennsylvania with a Midwest cold spell. Northern counties report snowfall and accumulations as a sharp temperature drop moves through Tuesday. The state faces brisk winds and slippery roads as residents brace for continuing chill.
The Associated Press reports a brutal cold front drove Pennsylvania temperatures below zero in parts, with Pittsburgh dropping to around 10 degrees and downstream towns hitting single digits. Snow drifts reached six feet in rural areas, highways opened yet hazardous, and at least 14 hunters were snowbound near the New York border. Ice formed on streams and rivers as two women died in fires during storms.
Marlboro Massachusetts December 3 mayor Louis F Ingalls 55 facing trial on job selling charges drowned tonight in Fort Meadow lake after leaving a note for his wife saying he would sleep there. Medical examiner ruled death by own action by drowning after his fully clothed body was found in a lake near a hole driven in five inches of ice. Ingalls in first year of second term was to face Middlesex county Superior Court Thursday on an indictment charging him with accepting bribes in connection with ice selling.
West Newton, Dec 3 4 The borough council of Westmorland county town offers a $100 reward for information leading to the arrest of a person suspected of deliberately disabling the fire alarm system. Councilman Robert Umbarver cites a deliberate attempt to embarrass the community. He confirms wires were cut at two sites two weeks earlier but does not name the suspect.
Somerset county officials heard a proposal from Johnstown mayor John Conway Evan Lloyd head of the Community Chest and Cambria DPA director Edward Golob to use a stamp plan for distributing surplus foods to relief old age pension ADC and WPA workers. The plan would replace current warehousing and truck deliveries with local merchants handling surplus items bought with orange stamps and blue stamps redeemable for goods. It would require a $20 000 county funds to buy stamps and would take about six weeks to implement once legislation passes.
John Henry Thaxon a 70 year old farmer collapsed and died of a heart attack in a Washington store while attempting to telephone for a physician for his seriously ill wife. The incident occurred on December 3.
Evelyn Asay of Mt. Carroll Illinois, only 18, won the grand champion steer award at the International Livestock Exposition with her Hereford Sarge weighing 1087 pounds. J Charles Yule of Carstairs Canada judged the entry over a roan Shorthorn from the University of Alberta. Sarge also claimed junior show top honors a week earlier.
Judge Keenan ordered dismissal of seven of eleven indictments in Greensburg bench trial. Lukac Chovanec of Yukon faced false pretense charges, David Miller Pittsburgh branch secretary faced conspiracy. Remaining counts for Miller and Chovanec sent to jury. Miller testified he told signers the petition was Communist and believed it legal.
Burgess H. Everett Musser presided over a Tuesday night traffic court with more than twenty motorists gathered for a lecture on borough all night parking regulations. About 20 citations were issued, but no fines were imposed as violators were warned and dismissed.
Edward R. Stettinius Jr announced Bethlehem Steel will invest to raise annual steel ingot capacity by 850000 tons to meet defense needs. Grace said $18000000 more will expand ingot coke and pig iron capacity, with plants at Bethlehem Lackawanna Maryland and Steelton adding furnaces ovens and rebuilt blast furnaces. Production has exceeded capacity for five straight months, with substantial shipments to Britain and expectations of rising British demand.
Blair Barkman of the Somerset Chamber announces Santa Claus will visit Somerset Saturday morning December 7 at 9:15 at the courthouse. The Somerset High School band will lead a short street parade to the Governor Theatre for a children’s party and prize drawing worth 75 dollars. Tickets for prizes will be distributed at the theatre for a December 14 drawing as part of holiday celebrations.
Warren December 3 Glenn Patch of Youngsville said he hunted deer unsuccessfully for years with a gun, but now reports bagging one with a bow and arrow. Neighbor Jim Lucan said Patch brought down the animal with one arrow and finished the kill with another yesterday.
Samuel Finley, a Westmoreland County farmer, lost his federal case seeking 25 000 damages against American Steel and Wire of New Jersey. He claimed injuries to his farm and livestock were caused by fumes from the Donora plant.
Maj. Gen. J. B. Chaney after a 43 day England survey says the British Isles are a fortress and the war may be decided in favor of Britain. He notes German air power and tactics, discusses phase shifts in air warfare, and urges focus on night bombardment defense and improved aircraft radio and anti aircraft guns.
Reporter H Taylor Henry describes Southampton rebuilding after bombing. Despite rain and air raids, officials estimate under five percent plant destruction, though worker displacement and housing loss hindered early returns. Damage hit shops and homes with several believed trapped under wreckage. a London movie theater suffered incendiaries but was evacuated without injuries. Earlier raids targeted London during morning rush hour and an East Anglian town, with streets machine-gunned and bombs dropped.
Harrisburg reports Attorney General Claude T. Reno said the state would renew its rackets probe in Washington County after indictments against former District Attorney James C. Bane and eight others were quashed. Reno, back at his desk after illness, added a decision on the next step would be announced soon, possibly seeking reconvening of the September grand jury or awaiting the February grand jury.
Washington Pennsylvania December 3 4 Judge Robert E Burnside ordered the November grand jury to reconvene December 16 for a new investigation of rackets charges against former District Attorney James C Bane and eight other Washington County men Special Judge W Russell Carr had dismissed 101 indictments earlier and granted a Commonwealth petition recalling the panel Special Deputy Attorney General Ralph Peacock requested the renewed inquiry which he said would last about two to three days of session efforts he assisted Hicks in the original inquiry.
