The Council of Wage and Price Stability warns steel firms may raise sheet steel prices now to preempt controls, risking higher car and appliance costs and potential broader inflation. Rep. Moorehead backs inquiry as Carter aides seek rescission of increases.
The outgoing Pentagon under Ford moved to start B1 bomber production costing 704.9 million for initial three planes with option for eight more. Carter will decide after Jan 20 whether to keep or cancel the plan, with monthly spending limits through June and no further testing needed, officials say. The move follows Rumsfeld and Reed arguing it offsets Soviet strength and that the aircraft is ready for production. Rockwell GE and Boeing received the contracts while Carter weighs the decision.
Tufts Dental School doctors report GK-101 spray can remove decayed tooth material with minimal drilling and little pain. In trials on 49 patients with 61 teeth, 58 teeth lost decay and 77 percent of cavities treated caused no pain. FDA approval and further testing needed before wider use.
FBI Director Clarence M. Kelley said he will not resign despite President-elect Jimmy Carter favoring a new FBI chief. Kelley told a reporter he has made the stance many times and remains committed to remaining in his post. Carter indicated a general stance about directors of the FBI and CIA.
The mother of convicted killer Gary Gilmore asks Supreme Court Justice White and Utah courts for a delay in his execution. Attorney Anthony Amsterdam and Utah lawyers file petitions to pause Gilmore's death so they can pursue a writ of certiorari with the U.S. Supreme Court. Gilmore opposes commutation and is slated for a sunrise firing squad, a first in nine years.
Cathy Denise Barron, 18, senior at Rockwood Area High School, won Rockwood Maple Princess as seven contestants competed in the high school auditorium. First runner up Kim Hoover is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Herbert Hoover of Rockwood.
President elect Carter is reportedly considering Gov. Shapp for a Washington job. Shapp aides Brown and Reece said transition officials sought Pennsylvania names and views on program budgeting and reorganizations. A list of about 30 potential appointees includes Beal Tucker Green Wilcox and McHale.
An Arctic air mass brought heavy snow to Somerset County on Thursday with about three inches of new snow and gusty winds. Temperatures remained in the teens, dipping to 3 degrees by 10 p.m. and possibly to 40 below wind chill in places. Wind gusts reached 30 mph as state police banished mobile homes and trailers from the road. no major accidents were reported though roads were icy and snow covered.
At Camp Pendleton California military authorities confiscated a list of 16 white Marines said to be Ku Klux Klan members after a racially charged clash. One Klansman boasted of more members in secret as officials moved names for human relations efforts and investigated the November melee that left whites hospitalized.
