Hundreds killed as Madrid endures a brutal air raid. British MP W H Green described gore and chaos among the wounded and dead in Tetuan and central districts while crowds fled Gran Via seeking shelter. A bomb struck the Communist party HQ in Eloy.
Merchants profit sharing hit the 60 member mark as 51 signatures were recorded yesterday. New members include Parson's Restaurant Daily American and Modern Barber Shop. Coupons cost shoppers nothing and boost chances for fifty one awards at the Park Theater Monday evening.
In December the Daily American will run a free employment ad for job seekers and provide six free insertions to employers seeking help.
Harrisburg officials announce gradual relief staff reductions of 20 000 to 33 000 WPA workers by year end due to reduced federal grants and better business conditions. About 245 000 currently on federal relief projects. Projections include lower project quotas and reduced non relief hires.
An elderly Meyersdale man named Daniel Ruch was struck by a car driven by J. J. Meyer of St. Louis on Route 40 near Addison. Ruch, injured with head and chest wounds, was taken to Frantz Hospital in Confluence in shock. Police planned to interview the driver in Somerset. no charges were filed.
In Montgomery a 3000 strong crowd of merchants and clerks marched on the Alabama state house to protest a proposed one and a half percent gross receipts tax on retail sales and amusements. Speakers argued for three hours while shopkeepers closed their stores for two hours.
Thirteen hundred Libby Owens Ford workers in Ottawa and 600 from Pittsburgh Plate Glass join a strike threatening auto glass production. Union leaders rush to Pittsburgh while Detroit UAW plans picketing at Midland Steel. Other regions report settlements and arrests as nationwide labor tension grows.
An American diplomat who loves a foreigner must propose twice one to the woman and once to the secretary of state. If the secretary approves the marriage proceeds. if not the diplomat faces dismissal. The State Department released a Roosevelt order forbidding such unions without approval, citing 122 married officers as evidence. Ruth Bryan Owen’s marriage to Capt. George Rohde is cited as a known instance.
Four and a half to eight inches of snow blanketed Somerset county and surrounding areas in the largest snowfall of the year. Earl Shaul a 16 year old from Friedens reported an eight point in Laurel Hill Mountain.
Judge Elder W. Marshall in common pleas court sustained the University of Pittsburgh appeal against paying city taxes on its large stadium and a four acre parking lot in Pittsburgh.
In Italy Carlo Forlanini successfully collapsed a diseased lung by introducing air into the chest cavity, allowing the healthy lung to take over. Dr John B Murphy of Chicago first described the method in 1898, with broader adoption beginning in 1912.
Attorney General Margiotti and counsel for 12 indicted in Fayette county clash over allowing a grand juror to testify. Duggan seeks to quash indictments alleging irregular grand jury proceedings while the court weighs secrecy of the grand jury room and admissibility of evidence.
President Roosevelt returns to the United States aboard the Indianapolis after a rain soaked farewell in Buenos Aires. He plans a brief stop in Montevideo then homeward. He pushes for a united American peace front and backs ratifying an Argentine United States sanitary convention.
About 100 county farmers braved grush and ice to attend Somerset Farm Bureau Cooperative Association’s first winter meeting at Stonycreek Township High School near Shanksville. Howard Latshaw of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau spoke on the marketing dollar and the group reported a $3,000 projected first month business plus $20,000 since opening a month ago. President E M Shaukis outlined plans for a series of winter meetings.

State Senator George Woodward urged impeachment of Governor George H. Earle for refusing to halt illegal coal mining. He argued the governor’s impeachment is blocked by Pennsylvania’s weak constitutional facilities and cited $32,000,000 in annual unhauled company lands coal theft.
New York Times London dispatch reports a constitutional crisis between King Edward and his cabinet over his marriage to Mrs. Wallis Simpson. It cites a possible abdication tomorrow and notes rumors the king may depart with Simpson, possibly as royal exile, as Prime Minister Baldwin reportedly presents an ultimatum.
Weather hindered hunting as 20 day deer kill reports remained low after day two. One kill was logged by Somerset warden Edgar M Woodward, four by Berlin area hunters Norman Brant Earl Eisentrout Reese Baum and George Scheller, and D C Pyle near Scullion claimed an eight point duck. Dr J F Maurer returned from camp reporting no kill and noting many does in the area.
The communications commission announced a second major reduction in AT and T long distance rates since the government began its inquiry. The $12 million annual cut will take effect once new schedules are ready, but no later than mid January, said Commissioner Paul Walker.
