An Allegheny Airlines twin engine jet attempted an instrument approach at Williamsport Montoursville Airport and rammed Bald Eagle Mountain during a snowstorm. Of 26 aboard 25 were killed with one survivor Louis Matarazzo. The crash left the tail section intact and rescue workers faced flames and wreckage in central Pennsylvania.
A rescue party climbed Bald Eagle mountain after Allegheny Airlines crash. Survivor Louis Matarazzo, of Springfield, Pa., was lowered by rope and kept conscious. Two other men were later found, one died en route to hospital. The scene showed wreckage and burned seats as rescuers tended survivors.
Mike Plaugher born without a left hand has increasing offers of help from an anonymous New Yorker a Massachusetts banker and a New Jersey rehabilitation center. The Crippled Children's Bureau in Richmond had planned to provide an artificial hand and a trust fund for Mike’s education may be set up from any excess gifts.
The Rev. Francis Corcoran of Williamsport described being lowered 50 feet to reach crash victims. He found three survivors, tended Louis Matarazzo who survived the ordeal, and stayed with him to the hospital. He recalled a horrific scene with burned bodies, rocks, and broken trees.
A fire reported to the New Centerville fire company Tuesday morning affected Dick Kimmell‘s home near Trent. Fire chief D L Cramer said 5 45 a m call required chimney plastering to be cut back. Damage totaled 125 dollars with about 10 firefighters on scene. Fire likely started in the fireplace.
Bids opened for the Somerset County home came in at 1 284 618 18, more than 100000 under the 1400000 estimate. Uniontown Construction Co led general bids with 756000 base plus deductions. W Yoder & Son submitted low plumbing and heating bids, Electrical Contractors Association low bid for electrical, and American Laundry & Machinery Co won laundry equipment bid. Ralph Underwood Inc held the food service equipment bid. Further study planned on gas installation.
A three judge federal court upheld the 1959 amendment banning Sunday sales in Pennsylvania by a 2-1 vote. The decision allows district attorneys in all 67 counties to enforce the Sunday closing law while ruling on the 1939 statute remains unsettled. Judge Hastie wrote the majority opinion with Judge Lord joining. Judge Welsh dissented in part.
Mitzie Jo Hammond age 5 and Mandy Lee Hammond age 3, granddaughters of Mr and Mrs Leroy Barron of Somerset, drowned after the ice on a pond at the grandparents farm broke. Paul Hoffman, the uncle, jumped in to rescue the older girl but could not reach the younger one before she disappeared. Coroner's report ruled accidental drowning.

Secretary of Defense Neil H. McElroy said Congress will be asked for funds to keep some nuclear bombers on airborne alert. He warned the U S may lag behind the Soviet Union in missiles for three years as defenses expand. By 1963 Polaris submarines and more ICBMs are expected, with B 52s and Hound Dog missiles enhancing striking options.
The Air Force practically eliminated the B70 heavy bomber program after spending about a half billion dollars. Only one or two test models will be built. the B52 remains in full production with hundreds already, aiming for up to 700 aircraft. Defense costs and ICBM development drove the shift. McRoy said Congress would be asked for more money to keep B52s on continuous alert.
Between the Nov 17 and Dec 1 meetings Central City Fire Company reported four alarms including one fire two losses and an ambulance run. Nominations for 1960 officers were set with roles for president vice president secretary treasurer drill master foreman and board members. The slate includes Paul Fleegle Ralph Chiappelli William Nosel Andy Barwatt and others. The year ends with plans for a turkey bazaar December 17–18 and a district meeting December 10.
Light snow blanketed sections of western Pennsylvania early Tuesday with warmer afternoon temperatures melting most of it. Traffic tie ups formed as slick highways slowed travel and a few minor accidents were reported.
Neil H. McElroy resigns as secretary of defense after 26 months directing drastic shifts in military concepts. Thomas Sovereign Gates Jr., an investment banker, is promoted to secretary, promising continuity as Russia leads in intercontinental missiles and the U S plans increased B 52 alert status. McElroy will witness Gates swearing in at the White House ceremony.
In Budapest Khrushchev boasted of enough nuclear rockets to raze foes and urged universal disarmament. He backed an East West summit with Adenauer and proposed a free West Berlin, warning a separate peace with East Germany if needed.
In Harrisburg the House Democrats rejected proposing a tax plan to fund a 55 million state school subsidy. Governor Lawrence and Senate leaders clashed over timing as the Senate paused, with McCann demanding a nonconsumer tax and the House pointing to an intangible personal property tax as matching revenue. The Senate rules panel delayed action, leaving a full vote pending.
The steel industry circulates a message to employees urging backing for a management settlement rejected in November. Negotiators vow to hold firm, while the Steelworkers Union accuses bad faith.
