A mass collision on the Turnpike near the Somerset interchange involved multiple vehicles. State police and tow crews worked to clear the roadway for hours as ice and drizzle left highways hazardous with several cars ditched and traffic heavily delayed.
Private Edward A. Zenadi nineteen, recently brought into the regular army, was killed at Fort Dix New Jersey in what Major General Clifford R. Powell called an accident. The pistol discharge by Private Victor A. Pirelli of the same battery caused Zenadi's death. Pirelli, twenty two, Camden resident, was handed to Burlington county authorities to await grand jury action on a technical charge of manslaughter.
Paul Good, 25, a Somerset County fugitive, was arrested early Sunday at a home in Ankeny Mines by state motor police and county officers. Indicted by a Somerset County grand jury on larceny charges for stealing a large quantity of telephone wire cut from rural poles. He reportedly worked at Fort Meade, Maryland, before returning home and was jailed to await court action.
In Calais Maine a 19 year old lost hunter was found dead near town last night with his clothing frozen and throat slashed. Sheriff said the youth took his own life after wandering with a party of 50 to retrace his steps. He lost his rifle and could not signal for help. He traveled in circles, apparently driven mad by the prospect of freezing.
Samuel Dobbins, business representative of Local 3, announced that 1,500 employees from 120 New York electrical supply firms would strike tomorrow for higher wages and better working conditions.
General Manuel Avila Camacho was sworn in as Mexico's president in Mexico City in an orderly ceremony attended by about 30,090 guards and officials. He pledged labor path reforms, creation of labor and marine ministries, and adherence to Pan Americanism, while U.S. Ambassador Wallace praised the new leadership and called for closer hemispheric economic cooperation.
Questionnaires have been mailed to prospective draftees in Local Board Area No 2 numbers 50 to 150. Capt W Curtis Truxal of Somerset said the 51 to 100 group mailed Friday and 101 to 150 mailed Saturday. Capt Don M Kimmel of Berlin said Local Board No 3 will send out another batch in two to three days after final checks. Somerset county’s six draftees are in the army at Fort Meade Md awaiting possible reassignment. No further draftees from Pennsylvania or Somerset are expected in December, as boards prepare for January 1940 quotas.
Two high school students died when a flaming car crash trapped them in the luggage compartment as the lid closed. Driver Dennis Burdis 15 also perished, with William Reminson 14 and Hoop er Carrton 15 seriously injured. Doris Finlayson 15 and Aeneas Anthony Collins 18 escaped but were readied. The second car’s driver R W Jackson 26 of Aldie Va his wife and son James were slightly injured.
Philadelphia reports a parking lot strike during Army Navy game visitors faced car access problems as Local 980 AFL walkout began Saturday midnight. Over 50 garages and lots in downtown area affected as union seeks shorter hours and higher wages. many visitors moved cars themselves.
Lisbon Portugal December 1 refugees flood the capital as Europe’s gate to the new world. Shipping lines between Portugal and the United States are few and unable to handle thousands seeking passage. Prospects for relief remain dim as the exodus continues.
Cadiz Ohio reports 27 bodies recovered from the Nelms coal mine with three more located and 23 identified. Ohio and Pennsylvania Coal Co officials estimate 31 lives lost from Friday’s explosion. Rescue workers faced gas and rock falls while recovering remains Section 12, 1500 feet from pit entrance. Cadiz cancels and postpones the Christmas parade and courthouse lighting for a week.
Capt. Joseph McCann of the state motor police at Bedford rejected rumors that the Pennsylvania Turnpike was closed or would close due to bad weather. He said the highway remains open and travels is possible in all weather, with Midway HQ receiving many calls about the alleged closure.
Matthew M. McKim 61, a county probation office clerk for 13 years and brother of Judge Samuel J. McKim, died of a heart attack while attending the Duquesne versus Carnegie Tech football game with his son Matthew Jr. of Oil City.
Associated Press reports Greek forces with the Italian army overwent heavy fighting to seize Pogradetz in Albania. Greek units entered gradually, mopped up surrounding hills, and cleared remaining resistance while pursuing elusive Italian detachments through snowy rugged terrain.
London dispatch reports a high altitude dogfight seven miles up over the southeast coast where two British Spitfire pilots shot down a German Messerschmitt. The German pilot bailed out and was captured near Dungeness. No special gear beyond oxygen was used, and the victory marked the 600th destroyer credited to the station’s squadrons. the two pilots shared a prize from station personnel.
Prince Bernhard of The Netherlands presented a 35,000 pound check, about $140,000, to the chancellor of the exchequer. It was subscribed by the people of Java for Prime Minister Churchill's Birthday fund. Churchill was 66 years old yesterday.
December 1 report from the Greek high command details capture of strategic positions near Premet about 25 miles north of Fonitza Greece. Spokesman says advances continue along the Albanian front despite bad weather. Prisoners and material seized, with Italians retreating from Pogradetz to the sea coast as Greek forces secure mountain heights and strategic positions.
London reports detail a seven hour raid on Southampton using tactics from Coventry. German bombers caused widespread destruction to churches, theaters, offices, and homes while ARP and fire crews worked to control devastation. An ambulance driver female hero aided three wounded men and evacuated them to hospital as many civilians escaped. American Red Cross ambulances assisted in rescue efforts.
Japanese planes dropped about 10 bombs on a single target along the Yangtze river near Chungking after signing their pact with Wang Ching-wei. Chungking remained untouched. Chiang Kai-Shek’s government offered 100,000 Chinese dollars for the arrest of the arch traitor.
The Central News Agency reported that a highly publicized Japanese offensive in Hupeh province was broken by Chinese counter-attacks. Japanese forces are reportedly retreating toward their original bases as a result.
German warplanes attacked a south coast town after a heavy overnight bombardment of Southampon and Lingland. RAF engaged over the Channel with eight German aircraft destroyed. five British planes missing. Flares and incendiaries struck the town, fires reported but contained. Royal Navy and air actions continued around the North Sea with ships sunk or damaged and hundreds of German supply vessels affected.
Berlin asserts night raiders set fires across Southampton with 70 fires reported by DNB as 20 large. High command says 79,000 tons sunk so far. RAF clashes over southern England and naval actions cited. Southampton fires reached warehouses near power stations and a new testing dock.
