Christmas Tree From Police Chief’s Yard Stands On Square

Rodgers quits Rhems Coal Co Pittsburgh leader resigns

William Rodgers vice president of the Rhems Coal Co Greensburg and the McCrady Rodgers Co contractors today announced his resignation from the Pittsburgh concern. He also presides over the Moore Plesher Hauling Co and says he will devote more time to coal and trucking interests. Worn sheets can be used to make pillow cases.

Army halves January draft as budget limits force size

Washington reports the army slashed its January draft call from 20,000 to 10,000 and warns the next year’s defense budget may not support the 900,000-man goal. Total defense outlays reach 23.0 billion. army strength could be limited to about 677,000, with two new divisions postponed. Navy and Air Force demand self-sustaining manpower, while volunteer enlistment remains below projections.

Milan reports from abroad indicate Margaret Truman has been invited to perform at La Scala. Dr Antonio Ghiringhelli, La Scala superintendent, would not confirm but noted he knows she is an artist and supports arts and friendly international relations.

$52,000 Spent By State AFL-CIO In Recent Election

In Harrisburg on November 30, the political arms of Pennsylvania's AFL and CIO reported spending about $52,000 in the November campaign. CIO actions totaled $43,842 in expenditures with $46,554 receipts, mainly from the national CIO PAC, while the AFL reported $8,761 in expenses against $8,353 receipts, much from the National Labor League. Major local donations included $1,750 to Allegheny County and $1,500 to York. Republican gains reduced the state delegation from 28 to 17, with Weldon B. Heyburn spending $3,915 in his auditor general race and W. J. Lane spending $1,899 in the treasurer race.

State Canning Industry Shows Big Expansion

Harrisburg, Nov. 30. W. C. Hagar deputy secretary of agriculture says Pennsylvania’s canning industry has grown over 300 percent in 20 years and now ranks fourth in the nation for value of fruits and vegetables processed. He cites double and triple digit gains in lima beans peas and tomatoes and notes expansion across old and new counties. He credits sanitary improvements in plants and notes the US ships over 100 billion containers for retail packing annually.

Bethlehem Lights Up as City Prepares for Yuletide
