Viet Nam authorities accuse Communist Viet Cong operatives of infiltrating Saigon to inflame Buddhist Catholic tensions. They report 499 arrests linked to last week’s deadly street protests as troops vow to shoot rioters if needed.
The Meyersdale fair closed with a talent show awarding 500 in prizes. Nine year old Joyce Boyer of Stoystown won top honors with a song and dance, taking 200 in savings bonds. Twins claimed several top spots while The Impalas won third with 100 in bonds.
Henry D. Harral secretary of highways will visit Somerset after a Johnstown ribbon cutting for Route 219 bypass officials and Somerset Route 219 Association members will attend. The news conference at the Somerset Pine Grill features Dr. Korns Judge Lansberry and General Foy with plans for rerouting Route 219.
Tokyo reports China’s Communist leadership rejected a Soviet invitation for a December conference to prepare a world Communist movement meeting with about 81 parties next summer. Beijing warned the move could cause a great split in the international Communist movement.
CAPE KENNEDY Fla AP The Titan 3A rocket slated for its maiden test flight Monday aims to test all three stages in a double orbital attempt. Standing 12 stories tall the booster will lift off at 11 am to assess stage separation stability over a 100 minute orbit before ejecting a satellite on a prescribed path.
Republican nominee Barry Goldwater winds down a week aboard the Sundance off Santa Catalina Island and Santa Barbara Islands. Dennison Kitchel aboard to discuss strategy while press secretary Paul Wagner receives word by radio. He plans to film appearances in Hollywood before returning to Prescott for campaign kickoff September 3 5.
A sharp earthquake struck Los Angeles County at 3:58 p m Sunday causing no reported damage. Police switchboards were flooded with calls from Hollywood and areas including Highland Park Baldwin Hills the San Fernando Valley Glendale Burbank Sunland and Pasadena.
Prime Minister Ismet Inonu called for an end to riots in a Cyprus crisis era. Demonstrations erupted in Ankara and Izmir as troops patrolled major cities. Police barred crowds near embassies while firemen dispersed about 150 protesters outside the international fair grounds. The Soviet Union protested looting and demanded safety guarantees for its personnel.
Washington AP describes President Johnson's bid to expand elderly health care through Social Security as an early Senate test. Senate leaders set a Monday start for debate on a House bill, with GOP opposition and hopes for a House Senate compromise shaping the outcome before the Democratic National Convention.
Detroit publishers and the Pressmen's Local 13 sought a fresh proposal on the 48 day newspaper strike as Gov Romney urged both sides to bargain anew. Union and publisher leaders debated terms including pay, wash up time and additional press staff while interim papers and expanded news coverage emerged in the Detroit area.
Clare Boothe Luce withdraws from New York Senate race paving the way for a head on contest between Republican incumbent Kenneth Keating and Democrat Robert F. Kennedy. Conservatives push to place Goldwater electors atop the ticket as Luce concentrates on the Goldwater committee.

Residents report heavy blast activity from a strip mine near Listie causing multiple large bay windows to break in homes. Names affected include Millard Shaffer Olen Hetrick and Zane Urban with plaster damage also noted. Citizens plan to seek action from Somerset officials to prevent possible injuries.
The Associated Press reports nine fatalities in Pennsylvania over the weekend. Seven died in traffic crashes while one man, Leonard L. Williams of York, died after an allergic reaction to a bee sting during a golf round at Memorial Osteopathic Hospital.
Isolated vandalism and looting erupted after dark in North Philadelphia as more than 1,200 police and park guards patrolled the area. Mayor Tate said law and order were restored and urged residents to stay home from church. Over two nights more than 150 stores were broken into, 247 injured, including 66 officers and two firemen, with one man shot in self defense.
Cecil B. Moore says reports of a Negro supremacist group behind North Philadelphia rioting are untrue. Terry Chisholm reports his commission received the Blood Brothers plan rumors weeks earlier, but police found no extremists at a hotel. Moore says agitators alone could not cause the violence.
