Moscow reports two female dogs Belyanka and Pestraya flew 281 miles into space aboard a single stage rocket and returned unharmed. The Aug. 27 launch from central USSR carried 18 pound dogs in a hermetically sealed cabin for upper atmosphere studies as part of the IGY program.

Mountain Iron Minnesota AP woodcutter Arnold Anderson faced a bear that stood on its hind legs two feet away. He grabbed his chain saw and slashed the bear’s belly, killing it. He then passed out and woke to find himself partially under the animal’s leg.
Taipei Formosa AP reports a heavy artillery barrage on the Tan islands near Amoy as Red China threatens invasion of Nationalist offshore outposts. Officials say 7,120 shells hit Tatan and Ehrtan in one hour, heightening fear of an imminent Quemoy assault amid continual bombardment and sparse Communist air activity.
Somerset county airport plans a Labor Day dedication at 2 p.m. for a new 3,500 foot paved runway. Khrushchev agreed to a U S Britain proposal to begin talks on suspending nuclear blasts by October 31 and suggested Geneva as a summit site. The Moscow broadcast stressed the talks aim to end tests of nuclear weapons by all states for all time. President Eisenhower’s Newport HQ had no official comment.
In Chatham England AP Jim Thornton a British sailor appeared in court accused of driving a car with flapping fenders defective steering load brakes and without insurance or a driver's license. He said I only paid six pounds for the car. The judge retorted you bought yourself a packet of trouble fining Thornton 44 pounds 15 shillings 125.30.
U S officials report President Eisenhower intends to deter a Chinese invasion of offshore Nationalist outposts like Quemoy by showing strength without rhetoric. Top aides affirm no appeasement with Peiping while private briefings avoid detailing possible responses to an invasion.
Borough police report complaints about the new parking meter system. Gold meters take five or ten cents for up to one hour on Center Avenue and parts of Diamond and West Main. Aluminum meters offer two hours for ten cents or one hour for five cents in most areas. East Fairview to Kimberly uses ten hours for 25 cents. Red meters in front of the courthouse and post office charge five cents for 15 minutes.
Pvt. Ray Maruschek from Philipsburg Pennsylvania earned a bravery citation after helping evacuate passengers from a Northwest Orient Airlines crash near Minneapolis. Rep. Don Magnuson praised him as the real hero for tearing a hole in the plane and guiding women and children to safety. He awaited orders at Fort Lewis after furlough.

President Eisenhower promised careful consideration of the 275 million depressed areas aid bill in a letter to Rep. John P. Saylor. The measure, passed Friday, would authorize federal loans and grants to spur industry in areas with long-standing unemployment. Rep. Hugh Scott also said he received a similar pledge from the president to sign the bill.
