Craig West a 16 year old Salisbury Scout saved Yves Lalime a 12 year old from Montreal after a rough North Carolina beach incident. West used an inflated interlube to reach the unconscious boy and guided him to shore then to a campsite and doctor. The casualty recovered after two days in Elizabeth City hospital. Two others drowned in the area this year and lifeguards had been cut for financial reasons.

Linda Lehman a 21 year old nurse at Somerset Community Hospital found a distraught father aiding his three sons and another child amid gasoline fumes at Lake Youghiogheny. She performed artificial respiration on an unconscious boy while nurses Kathryn Frantz Sharon Rothwell and Sandra Smith assisted. Dr Edwin M Price arrived with three ambulances and all four youths received oxygen and were rushed to the hospital with praise for the nurses' rapid action.
