Veterans Lose Jobs Over Union Nonmembership in Charleroi
In Charleroi on August 28 a wave of ex servicemen were ousted from a seven mile highway job between the Pennsylvania Turnpike western terminus and Washington Pa for refusing to join the American Federation of Labor union. About 20 to 30 walked off later, with total ousted estimated around 70. The project, a $2 1 million contract awarded to Adam Eidemiller of Greensburg, requires union labor. Some veterans say they were not told of the union rule and faced fees escalating from 5 to 25 dollars before joining was demanded. Nick Stirone, union local head, called the firings regrettable and urged the men to stay on the job.
