The Senate approved the draft bill by a 58 to 31 vote as critics warn of treasonable stride by communist elements. Senator George calls for vigilance and stronger safeguards while proponents urge swift passage and enforcement.
The Senate approved a peacetime draft bill by a 58 to 31 vote, sending it to the House where conflicts over a similar measure continue. The plan would require 21 to 30 year olds to register for a year of training and allows 18 to 35 year olds to volunteer for service. The process aims to recruit about 4 million trained personnel within five years, with exemptions for dependents and conscientious objectors. The bill also includes a provision to draft industrial labor if defense needs require it, amid debate over profits and broader economic controls.
A Somerset county court jury awarded Mrs. Lillie G. Pile $1,400 in damages from the county commissioners over Route 219 relocation affecting her Jenner township farm. The trial followed a trespass suit against Ralph M. and Grace Bloom of Quemahoning township. Evidence from both sides and testimony spanned more than three days. The proceeding came after disputes over damage estimates ranging from 800 to 2,500 dollars.
Washington Pa Aug 28 Union Leaders said a conference with striking miners at Jones and Laughlin Vesta No 4 mine at Daisy Town was adjourned to tomorrow afternoon. They seek to end an unauthorized walkout that began last week over slate removal, affecting four plants and about 4000 workers. No talks have occurred since contract terms require miners to return to work before grievances can be considered.
Greensburg August 28. Two Monessen men Fred Lilia and Steve Gaspich were convicted of misrepresenting Communist party nominating petitions and ordered held in jail on $5,000 bond each pending appeal. Witnesses testified they were told the petitions aimed to keep the United States out of war.
Windber officials and Burgess Barefoot tried to locate Jimmy Walls and his mother in Windber while the Animal Rescue League of Pittsburgh pledged to return Chubby the mongrel to the nine year old boy without the usual $25 fine. Jimmy wrote to a Pittsburgh paper saying he cried after a dog catcher seized Chubby. Attempts to locate the boy and mother have failed, with windber and Pittsburgh officials coordinating a search and community offers to help.
Steve Ream aged 20 and his sister Dorothy, 18, of Hyasota were held on bond after pleading guilty to auto larceny counts and operating with a suspended license. Each faced $500 bonds per offense and were jailed for inability to post. Investigators linked them to three stolen Somerset cars and a fourth abandoned near Hyasota.
In Bucharest Aug 28 Romania formally accused Hungary of hostile acts after a Hungarian bomber was forced down by anti-aircraft fire during an attack on a Romanian civil airport at Satu Mare in Transylvania. A second Hungarian bomber was crippled after crossing the frontier at Suceani while battles with Russian planes also occurred with reports of several aircraft pertes.

In heavy fog near Reels Corners on Thursday afternoon two autos collided. O G Hess of Mt Lebanon drove east and tried to pass, hitting Otto Sylvester Hershberger’s car. Injured: Vernon Ohio resident, Hershberger with bruises, Florence Hershberger with displaced teeth and jaw fracture, Audrey Wike with contusions and shock, Betty Thortenson with upper jaw fracture and shock. All treated at Bedford Timmins hospital. Alice Hershberger uninjured. Jennertown substation police assessed $600 damage per vehicle.
Ben Rubin organizer of the Communist party in Reading since 3 years held in lieu of 4500 bail on perjury and election law violations. Chief Detective Tulley swore the warrant after DA Marx cited fraudulent petition signatures to place the party on state ballots. About 900 Berks County signatures found with fewer than a dozen registered Communists.
Washington August 28 Amid ongoing debate over military aircraft buys the Army announced contracts for 870 additional planes costing 14 410 233 dollars. Primary aim is to train pilots for a large air fleet with 850 trainer aircraft and 20 transports included in the orders.

The raid lasted 2 hours 54 minutes from 12 24 a m to 3 18 a m EST with many flares dropped and western suburbs seeing shell fragments.
