Somerset County Fair crowns five champions at Meyersdale
At the Somerset County Fair a 17 year old Rockwood youth won the horseshoe pitching contest after six hours. Bill Howard led a large crowd in the Tri County Pony team pulling event as ponies dragged a 3,100 pound sled. Ralph Resh of Bedford County won lightweight pony class first prize of 30 dollars with a 18 and a half foot pull. Jim Howard of Somerset took second and Boots Miller third.

Jobless roll in Somerset-Cambria drops 1700 in July
BES figures show 88,400 employed in the two-county area, 1000 fewer than a year ago. Metal and machinery layoffs lowered manufacturing meanwhile nonmanufacturing jobs fell 400 as seasonal demand rose 400 in service and construction.
