Willkie stresses need for a knowledged defense plan with clear guidance for the commission and leadership to know what to do and how to head the effort, urging decisive action and organizational direction.
Wendell L. Willkie called for expanded authority for the national defense advisory commission and a designated chairman. He urged William S. Knudsen to head the group, saying production could improve with a directing leader and a formal report from the old war resources board. He also noted Texas worries over cabinet changes and welcomed a possible tri party debate with Norman Thomas.
In Waynesburg two sisters Otis Cumberledge and Elizabeth Pettit waived preliminary hearings and were held for trial at the September Greene County term on charges of aggravated assault and conspiracy to murder. They were unable to post 5000 bail each. Mrs. Headley who was shot five times during a staged holdup August 13 at her home is reported improving. her husband Robert Headley 49, posted 9000 bond and denies involvement. The sheriff said the women admitted guilt.
George N. Seger, 74 year old Republican dean of New Jersey’s congressional delegation, died at Naval Hospital Washington after a brief illness. Represented the Eighth district since 1923 and a Passaic resident had planned retirement this year. Gordon Canfield named as successor. Heart ailment attributed.
Somerset borough council discussed a proposed annexation by petition of freeholders from Somerset township adjacent to the borough. If approved, about four hundred acres will be added and the population increased by roughly 1,000. The plan takes effect after the current school year ends. The council also approved installing parking meters on Center Avenue and West Main Street for a six month trial with revenue sharing. ownership reverts to the borough after payment.
The permanent joint board on defense opened in Ottawa with the US section led by Major Fiorello H. La Guardia and the Canadian side chaired by Col. U O M Biggar. Discussions focused on specific defense problems and how to coordinate action between nations. Meetings proceed with potential adjournment by Wednesday as members balance duties. The talks implement the MacKenzie King Roosevelt agreement into action.
Mrs. Mary Brings, 60, of Duquesne, mother of Dr. Philip B. Brings Jr., died after a car returning from a Florida vacation skidded on Lincoln Highway and struck a pole near Bedford. Daughter Marie Brings was critically injured. Survivors include two sons Theodore and William and three daughters Edith Helen Cummings and Dora M Nally.
Washington, Aug 26. President Roosevelt plans to let Jesse H. Jones keep his federal loan administrator post after becoming Commerce Secretary. Jones prefers the Commerce portfolio and would not face Senate approval until a bill allowing dual federal service passes. The measure would cap his pay at the cabinet level.
A gasoline stove explosion in a Confluence trailer seriously burned Mrs. Mary Thompson 38 of Marlboro Mass and lightly burned her husband Ephraim 36. She remained critically ill in Somerset Community Hospital as doctors fought to save her with blood transfusions after the blast.

A 56-car motorcade carrying about 165 congressmen federal and military officials toured the new $70,000,000 Pittsburgh to Harrisburg high speed highway near Somerset. Lead cars reached 100 mph while most traveled 60 to 80 mph through seven tunnels and the largest cut in the nation. Engineer J M Kantner described stops at Middlesex Carlisle and Blue Mountain tunnel noting mercury vapor lighting at Allegheny tunnel and the Negro Mountain cut. The group paused for lunch at Midway then toured Allegheny and Laurel Hill tunnels before arriving in Irwin for a banquet at the Duquesne Club. The trip included Brigadier General Devers and Maj Eugene Harrison representing Secretary of War Stimson. Cartwright called the four-lane road “the mother of highways.”

Six others remain ill in Sayre and Binghamton hospitals as coroner probes a possible mix of rat poison with pancake flour or botulism from canned beans. Double funeral set for Orwell township couple George and Josephine Pennell. Others affected include Leon Pennell and three Pennell children, with a brother and a nephew among the ill.

Indictments allege slot machine operations grossed about 500 000 dollars during Banes term and lottery funds over six million dollars.
Delegates to the Vegetable Growers Association of America said the nation's vegetable larder is more than ample in the event of war. The assertion was made during today’s convention discussions about supply and readiness.
Berlin woke to the second British air raid in two nights with 40 minutes of distant gunfire. German and British reports conflict on planes destroyed. raids spread across Kent and southeast England as 165 tons of bombs fell on 38 towns, including Birmingham.

The Associated Press reports the Luftwaffe used a coordinated conveyor belt style raid on London, with fewer than a dozen planes at a time and many more likely involved. Planes circled the city’s defenses, dropped bombs, and refueled offshore, resembling German infantry tactics of sweeping villages in lines. Fuller reports from both sides are needed to assess effectiveness.
John McGrogan aged 66 of Somerset R. D. 2 was committed to the county jail for three days after a hearing before Justice of the Peace H. S. Whipperman on North Center avenue.
A Royal Air Force bomber crew reported their first Berlin bombing run, overcoming heavy anti aircraft fire and dense cloud cover. They followed a moonlit lake reflection to locate a main road junction, dropped bombs, then dodged guns as clouds closed in again.
Mexico City police chief Nunez hands the investigation to prosecutors and says Sylvia Ageloff of Brooklyn probably was involved with Frank Jackson, held for stabbing Leon Trotsky. He calls Jackson the real murderer and labels Ageloff a probable accomplice.
