Turnpike trooper dies after tractor trailer crash
Trooper Stephen Gyurke 29 of Somerset died at Frick Memorial Hospital after a tractor trailer struck him on the Pennsylvania turnpike while he stopped a speeding rig near New Stanton interchange. The second truck sideswiped the trooper, fatally injuring him. driver Charles W. Culver 38 of Charles City was jailed on aggravated assault and battery charges with possible involuntary manslaughter added. An inquest is planned in about three weeks. Gyurke, who joined the force in 1954, resided with wife Margaret and leaves a large family including one brother who is also a state trooper.

A five car pileup 13 miles west of Donegal interchange left five vehicles damaged in a chain reaction during heavy fog and rain.
