Toll Gate Inn proprietor Smear dies by own action
Stephen Joseph Smear 37 proprietor of the Toll Gate Inn in Benscreek died Tuesday morning from two bullets to the chest fired from a Smith & Wesson revolver. He was found by his five year old daughter Nancy Kay in an upstairs bedroom after he reportedly worked until about 3 a.m. The death is ruled a suicide with no note found. Surviving are his wife Anna Beleskey Smear and three children, his parents, a brother in Germany and three sisters. Police say financial and domestic problems and a recent inn remodeling may have contributed to the tragedy.
