Washington dispatch reports the War Department may drastically reduce the 10 year court martial sentence of Pvt Habinyak for repeated disobedience. Capt. Elliott Roosevelt visited a Wapping Wharf pub after touring bombed Thames ruins. He joined patrons in songs and accepted a kiss from 60-year-old regular Auntie Sue Cunningham after she urged him on and he invited her to kiss him, receiving a genuine smacker.
Henry Turk 83 a long time weather observer in Parker's Landing Armstrong county was struck and killed by a car while returning home from filing a river stage report. The vehicle swerved off the road and hit him on the sidewalk. A young man sat in the car when it stopped and another occupant fled police seek the second person. Turk retired from Western Union in 1939 after 70 years of service.
Greensburg man Lloyd Elsworth Hays, 46, was struck by an automobile along the Lincoln Highway near Greensburg and killed. James Hardigan, 72, of Lloydsville, was struck and killed by a Pennsylvania railroad train while walking along the tracks near Latrobe yesterday.
Nicholas Burin aged 45 of Hubbard Ohio died in a Mercer hospital from injuries after a vehicle left the Mercer Sandy Lake highway and struck a cement bridge.
Grey haired men and women who attended the Hunter School between 1890 and 1905 gathered for their first reunion yesterday in Blacklick township LAIRSVILLE Aug 24.
The Stonycreek township consolidated school will open Tuesday, September 2, for the 1941-42 term with regular daily classes. Enrollment is expected to rise in both high and elementary grades as the district begins operating independently again. New staff include Helen Daugherty as English history and health teacher for fifth and sixth grades and Marian Lynch heading the commercial department in the high school. R. B. Barner becomes full-time supervising principal. A daily noon cafeteria will operate on a non profit basis, run by Miss Gibson with hot lunches available for students remaining noon hour.

Berlin reports Nazi warships and U boats have sunk 25 merchant ships totaling 148200 tons. Among them 21 freighters from a British convoy bound for Gibraltar were lost after days of pursuit. A Afriti class destroyer a Corvette and a guard boat were also sunk. Eight ships escaped to Portuguese waters.
After a 2.5 hour conference with company officials and union reps, Rear Admiral Harold G. Bowen said yard superintendents and foremen would meet to plan operations and that work could be in full swing by Tuesday. Union leader Daniel Deans announced the strike is over as 3,500 Local 16 members approved ending the walkout at a Jer sey City mass meeting.
