Flight of C119 Crashes Into Homes Killing Nine
An Air Force C119 boxcar, crippled by engine trouble, crashed into three frame houses near Charleston base. Nine people, including eight civilians and airmen, died. Five crew members were trapped and perished. six airmen and four civilians survived hospitalized with noncritical injuries. Firefighters and locals witnessed the blaze as rescue efforts began.

Five people including three children were injured in a two car crash on Route 219 just south of the Cambria Somerset line. Gordon J. Jones 16 of Johnstown and Patricia O. Chynoweth 27 of Johnstown were involved. Jones lost control at 5 45 pm. Five month old Jeffrey was listed in serious condition with head injuries. Car damage was about $1000.

Oldest WWI Veteran in Somerset to Mark 80th Birthday
Frank L. Baker of Edie born August 25 1875 in Somerset will celebrate his 80th birthday on Thursday. He joined Company C of the 110th Infantry 28th Division at Somerset February 6 1915 and went overseas May 1918. He was captured at the Marne June 15 1918, later discharged May 23 1919 at Camp Dix New Jersey. He worked as a house painter for nearly 40 years and married the day before leaving for Germany. He now lives with Sam Conn who runs a local Edie grocery.

An 82 year old farmer drove an automobile that fatally injured Edward Six a 44 year old worker on Route 88 near Waynesburg. The driver William Johnson of Clarksville R D 1 is identified by Michael Lucas Greene county coroner. Six was employed by Yoder Construction Co of Uniontown. No charges filed pending further investigation.
