U S naval headquarters in Tokyo says bombardment aimed at destroying key North Korean plants possibly linked to the Russian atomic program. B 29 raids on Chongjin and surrounding targets dumped over 800 tons of explosives, damaging industrial and communications sites north of the 38th parallel.
Washington August 23 nationwide railroad strike set for 6 a m next Monday was called by the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Order of Railroad Conductors after White House talks collapsed. A Canadian strike adds to North American transport crisis.
Ottawa organized an airlift to fly members of parliament to an emergency session to address a coast to coast rail strike now in its second day. More than 200 000 workers are idle, including 124 000 rail strikers, with food shortages and supplier delays feared as industries depend on CN and CPR rail lines. Remote northern Ontario towns ration food and layoffs spread, with Nova Scotia coal miners among the first casualties.
Somerset rural mail carrier Ray Mickey of Markleton post office crashed into a tree on Route 53 near Confluence during dense fog early Wednesday while delivering papers. He received facial cuts and chest injuries at Price hospital and will be homebound for some time. a substitute carrier took over the route.
Richard Maize Pennsylvania state secretary of mines will receive an award from the Joseph A. Holmes Safety association at the Somerset County Mining Institute meeting in the Somerset courthouse at 7 30 p m Thursday. The honor cites Pennsylvania as the safest coal mining state in the nation for 1949 with 1343875 tons produced per fatal accident and low fatality rates in soft and hard coal. The Holmes association, led by Dr James Boyd, will present the award to Maize via J J Forbes, Bureau of Mines safety chief.
New York August 23 Julius and Ethel Rosenberg are held on $10,000 bond each pending trial set for September 25. Judge T Hoyt Davis ordered trial on charges they conspired to pass national defense secrets to a Russian spy ring. The indictment cites involvement with Harry Gold and David Greenglass.
A daredevil motorcycle stunt at the Somerset county fair in Meyersdale left Henry Myers of Charlotte, North Carolina with serious facial and arm burns. First aid was given at the fairgrounds Red Cross station, a doctor was summoned, and Mrs. Edgar Berkley supervised the station as eight to nine thousand spectators watched.
Captain Judy publishers and bookseller of Chicago will host a Garrett homecoming luncheon at Garrett Lutheran church on September 2. Guests must be Garrett natives or residents 75 years old or over, others may attend for a plate charge. Local committee led by Verda Brant Herbolsheimer. toastmaster Charles A. Merrill. Burgess Karl Gray, Sr. will attend.
Four Brentwood bus drivers Earl F Gastel Richard C Thompson William Weidman and Alfred DiLembo were fined 25 and costs each for operating an illegal jitney service in Brentwood. They work for Brentwood Motor Coach, part of a Pittsburgh area strike by AFL Motor Coach Employes. The PUC explorer said they collected fares violating rules as hearing on restoring charters looms.
Freeman Darr, 49, Jenner, and Nelson H. Shankis, 54, Somerset R. D. 3, were committed to the county jail on desertion and non-support charges by Squire Charles J. Harrison Jr. Darr also faced a surety of the peace charge. Elwood Clark, 19, Boswell, jailed on a court process as a fugitive from justice. Boge Harrill, 32, Champion R. D. 1, committed Tuesday by Squire W. F. Sembower of Rockwood on a disorderly conduct charge.
The agriculture department announced an 85 000 short tons increase in raw sugar supply for the continental United States under 1950 quotas. The decision expands available sugar as part of annual quota adjustments.
The Public Utility Commission authorized West Penn railways to replace trolley service with buses on routes between Connellsville and Uniontown and between Leisenring No. 1 and Dawson.

Eastern Pennsylvania similar but with interior warming and southeast scattered showers on Thursday.
