Holstein show at Somerset fair crowns junior and grand champs
A junior yearling Holstein named grand and junior champion led the breed open class at Somerset County Fair. Owner John Hoffman of Berlin RD 4 also won junior get of fire and grand champion FFA class. Veril Maust showed the reserve senior champion. Other breed winners include Hoffman, Maust, Bittner, Carr, and Yoder across multiple age groups and classes. Event notes list Today livestock judging starts at 9 am with beef, swine, sheep, and a tractor pull. Thursday features horseshoe, pony pulling, and farm parade with seniors admitted free until 4 pm.

The Somerset County Commissioners named eight sites for field voter registration on September 6 and 13 with two evening sessions each. Registering in person will occur at Berlin Somerset County Home for the Aged Boswell Municipal Building Central City Municipal Building Davidsville Boy Scout Hall Confluence Community Center Building Quemahoning Township Katnner Elementary School Building The Hill Windber American Legion Building The term of five years was approved for new appointees to the Somerset County Industrial Development Authority with one year extended as chairman Henry B. Reiley Jr. The board also reappointed Steve Bahorik Cairnbrook and Steve Gironda Conemaugh Township to the IDA board.

Kimmel Denied A New Trial In 1971 Slaying
Harry Kimmel 50 of Jenner Township was denied a new trial by President Judge Charles H. Coffroth. Convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the Nov 29 1971 death of Raymond Keith Miller 16 the case centered on a love triangle with Kimmel ex wife and Miller's mother. Trial revealed a .357 Magnum revolver and an emotional confrontation between the two women. The court held first degree murder was unwarranted and approved the voluntary manslaughter verdict. Additional actions included appointing Catherine K Prince as Ursina borough tax collector and approving rental of keypunch machines and a verifier for the assessment office. No meeting next Tuesday due to a commissioners convention in Pittsburgh. next session Sept 5.
