Train Wreck Blamed on Improperly Laid Track
ICC investigator Earl Delaney blamed the July 28 derailment of a Pennsylvania Railroad excursion train on track conditions. Insufficient ballast, loose tie plates, many spikes not driven, bent or anchor spikes missing, and tight track spacing allowed for expansion contributed to the disaster killing 19. The hearing record may stay open, with further public airing planned later by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission.

McGuire Jailed On Charge of Passing Bad Checks
Edwin S. McGuire of 696 East Main Street is jailed in Somerset County on a charge of cheating by fraudulent pretenses after allegedly passing a bogus check under the name C. W. Myers at Hamer Service Station. The $82.50 check and $61.70 change from a $20.80 tire sale were involved. State police aided in identifying McGuire and he was recommitted without bail due to probation.
