Latrobe Scaffold Tragedy Kills One Injures Other
Latrobe man Robert Lattanzia 26 died four hours after a scaffold collapse at Somerset high rise construction. Fellow worker William Foy 24 of Roxbury suffered serious injuries. They were removing bricks on the top edge of a building when the cornice wall gave way. The accident occurred on the South Planxtin street side. Both men worked for Joseph J. Graciano Construction of Pittsburgh. Foy described brick removal as the slab fell and the scaffold failed. Lattanzia died from a fractured skull and neck injuries. Foy sustained a deep facial laceration and a broken ankle. Ambulance transport to Somerset Community Hospital. Dr. C T Saylor called to the scene. Funeral director notified.

Seventeen year old Manfred Tanz, who stowed away on a merchant ship from Germany, was ordered deported to Germany after a Pittsburgh federal hearing. He came to find Robert O. Baer of Johnstown, once an Army captain, who befriended him during World War II. Baer moved to Philadelphia. Tanz lacked proper visas and was an alien stowaway.
