Szala Dies After Route 53 Wreck in Somerset County
Frank Szala, 23, a Tire Hill miner, died at Memorial hospital in Johnstown after a late Thursday crash on Route 53 at Benscreek. He was fatally injured when his car sideswiped a truck driven by Herber Greig, 22, of Holsoppie. The accident, near Sicheri beer parlor, left Szala with multiple injuries. the truck sustained damage of $259, Greig and a companion uninjured. Investigators from Jenner town substation probed the case. an inquest may follow. Szala's death marks the 29th auto fatality in Somerset county for 1941 through July.

Baltimore Man's Narrow Escape in Route 219 Crash
A Baltimore man, Charles Little, 33, was treated at Somerset Community Hospital for scalp lacerations after the car he rode in overturned on Route 219 north of Sipesville late Wednesday night. The driver, Glenn Moore, escaped injury. State police said a wheel dropped off the paving as the driver tried to return the car to the road. the vehicle was demolished in the crash.

Duane Hershberger a 39 year old entrepreneurial pilot from Greensburg died when his light plane crashed near the Keystone airport. He learned to fly under Al Young at Somerset and was a respected figure at the Somerset Flying Field. He had about 175 hours in the air with 75 at Somerset and held a recent pilot license. He planned to move to a newly remodeled farm near Evehsburg with his own landing field. Friends recall his kindly nature and generosity despite mild ribbing from fellow pilots. Funeral services are expected to attract many Somerset flyers who will honor him with a flyover.

Four Day Strike at Monessen Ends
MONESSEN Aug. 21 A four day strike by CIO workers at the American Chain and Cable Page Steel and Wire Division plant ended after the selective service board rescinded military deferments for 10 strikers including the local union president. The plant, focused on defense materials, closed Monday as 950 workers joined 250 wire mill workers demanding full restoration of a 5 percent wage cut from 1938.
